UT Austin Non-Automatc Admit Discussion Thread Class of 2023

Thank you-yes we heard last Friday and we are anxiously waiting to hear about engineering.

Thanks:) I’m sure she’ll get engineering too:)

@grlgotexas congratulations to your daughter!! My S applied to government as first choice major and plan ii as second choice per suggestion from plan ii office. Anxious to hear. Does anyone know when the next round of decisions will come out?

My son applied to Communications with Plan II as second choice - we are still waiting and haven’t heard of any other non-auto admits yet. Two years ago my daughter went through the same process and did not hear in the initial round of acceptances. About 3 weeks later - mid December she was notified that she was accepted into her major, English. About another week later she received her Plan II manila envelope in the mail - made for a great Christmas. Based on what I have read about last year’s notifications, I am telling my son that we won’t likely hear anything until the Feb. 1 big release. Good luck to all …

My eldest son was a non-auto admit about three cycles ago and he received notification of acceptance to his major, History, and Liberal Arts Honors (LAH) in mid-November. We were told at a LAH info session that he might get early word on his acceptance to UT because if LAH was interested in him they would request the freshman admission folks to expedite his application so they’d know if he would be accepted into UT.

Also, and I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the information; however, here’s the latest post from the former UT admissions counselor which contains some info about the timeline going forward:

https://texadmissions.com/blog/2018/11/26/fall-2019-first-time-freshman-deadline-is-monday-december-3

“All decisions will be released by March 1. Starting soon, it’s likely that once per month around 1,000 highly talented applicants will gain admission to their first choice major. If you start hearing friends at school or social media learning their major or Honors, don’t panic. Almost everyone hears back in the spring rather than earlier. To my knowledge, nobody has heard back yet for competitive majors like Business, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.”

Sorry for delayed reply. Yes, my daughter was auto-admit. Half hour ago she received email with invite to interview for BHP. So, one more hurdle to get over – but, making progress slowly.

So if the last day for classes before break is December 10, do you think there will be a small wave during that week to hear something?? This wait…ugggg

Finals will start next week. My son has his last on 12/19/18. I think the UT staff is there until at least the 21st…yes uuuuuuugggg.

Its seems there’s been 3 waves of admits/denied notices so far…do you lot reckon there’ll be more today & tomorrow?

Sith77 how do you know there have been 3 waves of notices?

@Sith77 , Also, how do you know there were Denials? I’ve not ever heard of Denials until after all the Acceptances go out. To your initial questions, my guess, based on history, is that they’ll be at least one more ‘wave’ the week of Dec 17th. Most likely nearer the end of that week. Again, the vast, super majority of all Acceptances will happen starting late January and culminate nearer the 3rd week of February. Patience…good luck everyone.

@Txdad56
I know several people real-life who got accepted/denied in the 1st wave (3 weeks ago). You are flat out wrong to think UT hasn’t rejected anyone yet. It has. There’s a spring 19 transfer thread, reddit posts, twitter, and plain ole word of mouth for info. FYI, “all” notices should be sorted next week according to a permanent admissions staffer who I spoke to 2 days ago. *Another student was also told this yesterday, which was posted in the spring thread.
People accepted so far:
1.) Auto admits & Students with the mandatory 30+ hours prior to this semester. The students accepted in this wave are typically the 3.8 gpa’s or higher w/very good credentials.
2.) International students.
3.) Students with more than 30+ hours.

  • In all these groups there have been denials. *Confirmed.

For you parents: *I’m much older. This process is beyond stressful, so if one of your children get the chop tread lightly. Even though I’m close to 2x as old as all the people posting on here, the stress is the same. UT is a very special school, being apart of such a tradition is massive. I’ve gotten into some very good uni’s Wash-U, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota, Loyola-Chicago, and SLU. The UT admissions process is by “far” the most rigorous application process I’ve ever been through! I give myself a 50/50 chance at best. I transferred to my degree granting uni and graduated with a 4.0 gpa with +67 hours of straight A’s. That said, I had one bad semester well over a decade ago. Not sure UT will give a rat’s ass about how brilliant 90% of my overall application is when viewing that one bad semester. I don’t put much faith in the holistic review rubbish they speak of. UT is a public ivy and they behave as such. You parents should be immensely PROUD of your children. Having children that have their priorities sorted at such a young age is a blessing! I’m attempting to go to medical school after surviving aml Leukeamia, getting a UT degree and moving on to a very good medical school will change my life. I want very much to give back after being given a 2nd shot at life. Sorry to go off on a tangent folks.

*Remember people who get the chop on here “CC”, have no obligation to admit defeat. Many people who get the chop never again post–just my opinion here.

@Sith77 No offense, but some of those schools you listed are no where near as good at UT and I’m an OOS parent. Also, I think the difference you’re talking about is mainly transfer students not incoming freshman. I believe incoming freshman (ie kids still in high school ) have not yet been rejected.

I have to find the article where they stated it, but last year was the first time they ever sent rejections out prior to April.

@srparent15 Agreed. Some of those schools aren’t as good. But, Wash-U, UW, and Northwestern are. Wisconsin was ranked higher I believe a couple years ago. I only mentioned them b/c I have found this process the most difficult in my experience. Just my opinion. But, thanks for pointing out the obvious. The 2019 transfer thread has loads of high school seniors posting. Some were indeed rejected after the first wave. I don’t know anything more than that. If your son/daughter is in an honours program or something like that I haven’t a clue whether they treat those students differently. I’m sure you know more than I do on that subject. Happy Holidays to all of you, and good luck!

@Sith77 NW and WashU are both amazing private schools and much smaller than UT and can’t compare because people go there for different reasons like name/prestige. NW doesn’t even have an undergrad business program. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. UW-Madison is great for research and political science and is gaining in some of the other areas but not going to carry the same weight as UT for Business, Engineering or Comp Science.

@Sith77 If you know of incoming Freshman, 2023 UT applicants, getting denied, this application cycle, then that’s the first time I’ve ever heard of that. As much as nobody wants to talk about such a thing, someone would still have posted that here, at least their parent would have. I’ve been through this process once already for UT, and never did anyone post a Denial before March. I’m also speaking specific to UT. I do know other schools that have EA’s/ED’s that include Denials, but not UT. Believe me, I know the stress of going through this process, and at that time I was out of work going through my own health challenges, My previous response/statement wasn’t looking to incite anyone, just share my own experiences and knowledge.

@TXdad56 Okay mate, believe what you want. All sorts of students from HS seniors to Fresh, to transfers have been accepted & denied–fact. There’s a first time for everything I reckon. The process started over 3 weeks ago. Many people speculate there will be another wave tonight @ 7 pm. I have doubts on that tbh. However, I do believe next Monday & Wednesday there’ll be 2 more waves. I’m very sry about your illness and past job loss–tough break mate. *For what it’s worth I know the parents of one fresh who got denied. The fam attends my synagogue. Good luck, going forward.

@Sith77 where are people “speculating,” on the wave tonight?

Transfer 2019 thread. *Apologies to folks in advance, I didn’t in anyway mean to cause you lot angst. I need a glass of red wine tbh. Good luck to all your children. Take care all.

If you go to the top tier admissions article from last year (search for it) you will see that last year was the first time EVER that UT “released negative decisions” before the final release date at the end of Feb. So it looks like on Feb 1 last year they gave denials as opposed to the end of February like they normally do. I don’t see them giving denials suddenly in November/December this year all of a sudden for entering freshmen, so I agree with @Txdad56 that they have not suddenly changed their policy this year and started to suddenly deny freshmen, when they have never done it before.

Also, people would be posting their rejections if that were the case!
