UT Austin versus U of Rochester?

I am applying as an undergraduate this year, and my current major is sociology, but I will surely transfer into something to do with STEM. UT Austin is famous for its location and plenty of opportunities of internship and work while Rochester is famous for research opportunity and atmosphere. Which should I choose?

You are applying as a transfer or a freshman? Are you in-state for either school?

I am from China, and I am applying as a freshman

It’s not easy to transfer from sociology to engineering at UT. If you will apply as a freshman, why don’t you start out in the field where you want to be and apply for engineering?

@FloMoMom Engineering is not my goal. Sociology fits my activities so I chose it, and I mean to transfer to other majors, probably not engineering. Maybe something to do with finance and math. So back to the topic, what do you think of UT of Austin and U of Rochester?

Finance and Math? U Texas is about #6 in finance and $14 in math according to the rankings I saw. Rochester isn’t anywhere near there. I don’t get the high esteem for U Rochester. Its a good, local school, but not in the same category.

Were you admitted to both? If not, why don’t you apply to both?
Also, if you’re currently enrolled in a university, you can’t apply as a freshman.
Finally, you’ll need to show you have all pre-requisites for engineering, and they’re not the same as for sociology.
BTW, don’t pay attention to graduate rankings, which measure things that don’t affect undergrads (like research output and where professors publish - what you need to look at is selectivity rate, class size, graduation rate, special programs…)
@fluffy1338250: of course on a UT forum you’ll mostly find people in favor of UT.
Both universities are good. UT is a large public university and one of the best in this category. URochester is a highly selective private university with a high reputation in science. They’re very different.
