Both schools have the same ranking on newsweek.
Which school do you feel is better for science/pre-med?

Both are party schools too. ><

i'd choose UT-Austin but i dont know too much about UCSB. I do know that UT-Austin is a very good school and very selective.

^^ so's UCSB.

To the OP: what state do you live in? I think that'd be a bit important. Anyway, UCSB is a pretty damn good school, comparable if not better than UT Austin. Not sure about pre-med, though.

depends on which state you live in. if i lived in texas i would go to u of texas (in state tuition). if i lived in california, id go to ucsb (in state tuition). there ranked very similar and both offer good academics and a fun social life. have fun choosing. i probably would go with ucsb if i didnt live in either state, simply because i love santa barbara and the surrounding area (isla vista is a lot of fun) and id rather be in california (ucsb it litterely on the beach) than in texas, although austin is a awesome place as well. that being said, it looks like you live in texas, so i would imagine u of texas is a better financial bet for you. you have to determine if living in california on the beach and going to ucsb is worth the extra sum of money. i know i would be tempted if i had the extra cash lying around.

On the objective data, the numbers look pretty close although UCSB seems to get the best of most of the comparisons. IMO, the most significant difference is that U Texas is 2x the size of UCSB. There seems to be a real disconnect between the PA score and the way the rest of the data shapes up. Academics clearly prefer U Texas which probably reflects its status as a prominent research institution.

But the most telling stats of all are the in-state % of students and the cost. Both take a nearly prohibitive number of in-state students and the extra cost for OOS students is significant (nearly 3x). Others have already provided the obvious answer-wherever you live, if one of these is your in-state option, this would be the most logical choice.

woah i havent been giving UCSB the credit it deserves =O
