UT Austin vs UCSB Physics

I’m really into physics and want to spend the rest of my life studying it. I plan to go to grad school and get my Ph.D. I’ve narrowed down my safeties to UT and UCSB and I just wanted to know what is better for physics.

I am a texas resident and I was auto admit to UT. I really like the campus and the Austin feel and its much cheaper (in state)

UCSB I would have to pay OOS but I really like their CCS program.

So In your opinion whats better for me.

assuming it is affordable, CCS hands down. It is one of the premier programs in the country, considering itself “grad school for undergrads”. You’ll be well positioned to go to a top PhD program after CCS. You should make sure you understand what CCS is like, though. They expect you to be in the drivers seat just like in grad school, picking the classes appropriate for your education and taking part in research.

@mikemac

Yeah but do you think the out of state cost at UCSB would be worth it for CCS. UT has a Dean Scholars program which is very good but I think its different from CCS.

UT is the clear choice. Paying out of state cost buys you nothing. If you do well at UT, you will have the same grad school opportunities. You are looking at 10 years of schooling. No reason to pay a lot for the first four.

UT Austin’s Dean’s Scholars program is great at setting you up to be a successful graduate student. It focuses on only science majors unlike CCS, and it just edited the degree plan for physics awhile back to make it more flexible so that you can get to focus on the area you are passionate about as soon as possible. DS also gives out a scholarship of about $10,000 as well as making you eligible for other exclusive scholarships that are worth up to $20,000 which can be received in combination with the deans one.
