hi! i’m currently a senior in a texas public high school. at my school regular classes are free 100’s and so lots of kids have a really high rank this way but i took all ap classes so my rank is 27%. i got a 1290 on my SAT. i’ve been on varsity swim for all 4 years of hs and this year i’m a captain. for clubs i’m in nhs, math honor society, spanish honor society, science honor society, social studies honor society & english honor society which i am vice president for. i have 200 hours of volunteer work, ranging from volunteering in a hospital to coaching summer swim league. i’m also a lifeguard & swim instructor (not sure if jobs help college apps). ut is my dream school and i’d really like to go there next year. i wanted to apply for their nursing program but i heard it’s crazy competitive & i know my stats aren’t too hot. that being said, i was wondering if i major in psychology if i have a good chance of getting in? or maybe nutrition? i heard these majors are good for internally transferring into nursing later. please let me know! thanks
My best advice is to apply to the First choice major that you are most interested in. If that is indeed Nursing, then you should put that as your first choice major. I would suggest not undergoing the UT app process with an intent to internally transfer (especially to a extremely competitive program like nursing because the likelihood of that plan being successful is extremely low vs your likelihood of gaining admission based on your clear interest in a major). Not directed toward you, but gaming the system as a non-automatic (outside the top 6%) Texas applicant is nearly impossible. Generally speaking, you have a 1 out of 5 chance of admission as a non-auto.
Liberal arts (psychology) majors and Natural Sciences (Nutrition) are VERY competitive and so treat it similar to you would applying for nursing. You should apply to the one you’re most interested in!
