I also got into both programs and have visited both schools. It depends what you want to do and what kind of college experience you want to have. If you’re an instate student at Texas, then hands down you should go to UT. That being said, if you’re oos (like me) then Texas will cost only about 8 grand less than Tepper. With what I’ve read and with the research I’ve done, many aspects of the schools are fairly similar, however I believe that the BHP is becoming more well known in banking and consulting. If you want to go into energy, then Texas is definitely the way to go. If you want to stay in the Northeast and do more quantitative based business, then CMU might be a better route. With all of that being said, you also have to take a look into what kind of lifestyle you’re going to have for the next four years. Carnegie Mellon is known for its grueling workload and lack of social life. In addition, Pittsburgh is no where near as fun or interesting as Austin and it has generally crappy weather. Not to mention, it gets extremely cold during the winter. Austin, on the other hand, is known for great year round weather, giant live music scene, great restaurants, and full of interesting characters. Additionally, UT is well known for having an extremely fun social atmosphere. I’ve never read of heard of anyone not fully enjoying themselves at Texas, whereas every other review of CMU gripes about its lack of general fun. As for the BHP, it provides a close knit community of motivated and talented students that can live and study together. The classes are modeled after MBA case studies and, while they are very challenging, they are also extremely engaging.

In conclusion, if you want to fully enjoy your college experience (with both a fulfilling social life and course of study), live in a truly interesting city with great weather, and have amazing job opportunities, then go to Texas. If you LOVE math, want to stay in the Northeast, and don’t mind the overbearing workload or cold weather, then you should consider Tepper. Just to let you know my opinion (if you haven’t figured it out already) I would chose Texas over CMU any day. I did receive a 10 grand scholarship to UT and I’m hoping to devise a plan to get instate tuition after the first year, which is apparently entirely possible.
