UT/Cockrell Engineering social life

I know that the Cockrell school of engineering at UT Austin is one of the best in the country. How much free time do engineering students get? What is the workload like, and how often do UT engineers go out and have fun/socialize or go to parties?

If you party too much, grades could suffer and you won’t get the necessary grades to qualify for the major sequence courses.

I think where you live determines the social activities. My son lives in Creekside which is very low on any social activities, plus he feels pressure to study nearly all the time. Calculus is a bear of a class.

It depends a lot on how many hours you are taking and what classes as well. Your first year will not be that bad since most of the classes you are taking are the basics that everyone has to get out of the way. Also, how you feel about every class matters too. Personally, I find most of my classes not too rigorous right now, including calculus. This might just be me, but I wake up early in the morning, around 9 through the weekdays and about 9:30 to 10 on the weekends. This gives me ample time to get a lot of work done and allows me to watch all the games/hang out with my friends later on. The main thing is that you have to be organized. I don’t feel that living in a specific dorm will make it hard. The choices are in your hand of what you want do and there are multiple study spots throughout the campus that you can go to. Also, what a lot of upper classmen told me is to not worry about shutting myself up in a room all day studying. Go out, have fun, join organizations and do everything but keep it all in perspective.
