I am hoping some current UT students could chime in about the social life and classes at UT. Does social life revolve heavily around alcohol? If you are a non-drinker, will you fit in? What is a normal weekend like? Also, any info on classes would be appreciated. Do you get to know your professors? How big are the classes? Any input on your UT experience would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You can do whatever you want…

You can hang out wit ppl who drink or not drink
You can get to know your professors or not
You can do what you want on a weekend

… and class size depends on what classes you’re planniing to take. Just look at your degree plan and post back

Its up to you.

Most people choose not to know their professors.
You can stay in your dorm and play video games if you want. Actually you could just go to a dorm lobby and play there with friends. You could go out 4 nights a week. You can do research with professors. You can skip class and sleep all day. There are too many people to care what everyone else does.

Whatever you want to do, you will find it, and will find friends to do it with ;)

Example Friday/Saturday:
5pm - everyone goes home
9pm - people come back to west/campus to go out
11pm - Main library closes
11:01pm - Jester Wendy’s line goes out the door
1am - you see some drunk people around campus
5am - streets are quiet
11am - high schoolers visit campus or football game preparation starts
7pm - watch the game

But to answer your MAIN question/concern:
Does social life revolve heavily around alcohol? If you are a non-drinker, will you fit in?
Yes. Don’t even worry about it. You will figure it out.

You will fit in if you’re a non-drinker. They’re plenty that like to stay in while I know others that go out but just don’t drink. You can get to know professors. It takes effort on your part to go to office hours and the like, but it’s possible no matter the size of the classroom. Classes vary largely on major and the type.

And back to the social, many people drink and like to talk about it, but for the vast majority, it’s just something people do, they enjoy it and they don’t flaunt it, so you won’t feel uncomfortable with most people on the idea of drinking. And there’s definitely no such thing as normal weekend. Some people go out Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. Some go out one night. Others study in all the time. Others will stay in and just chill. It’s who you decide to surround yourself with. Also, even among people, it fluctuates. During midterms, most everybody will be in PCL and McCombs studying hardcore.

If you go to a party and don’t drink, it’s NO big deal at all. You just won’t be one of those zombies crowding around the dudes who are handing out drinks. You won’t be one of those people puking on the E-bus or waking up and not knowing where the hell you are or what you did! You won’t be one of those girls who can’t walk without tumbling over. Your liver will be forever grateful.

And you can drink if you feel like it. Myself, I know my limits.

If anybody gives you any crap about it, then they’re not worth your time.

Thank you so much people. That is a relief! knowing there will be no pressure to drink to fit in is good. I’m actually coming from overseas (Dubai) to UT and don’t know what to expect, I hope there are people who are into music, concerts, dance activities at UT, cuz this is what I’m into (assuming I’m gonna have free time, which from students at UT, heard that I won’t have much of it).

^Lol, clearly you’ve never been to Austin.

Just an example of one of the larger music festivals in Austin-

Yeah what Borb said. You can find someone humming a tune and strumming along on a guitar in almost any crevice around Austin. Some of it is mediocre, but theres tons of good musicians out there anyway.
