Hi I'm currently a freshman at Texas Tech University and I plan on transferring to UT Dallas next semester (fall). I will have a total of 28 credit hours by the end of this spring semester. I will also be taking about 6 credit hours of classes over the summer. I wanted to know what my chances are to getting admitted to UTD. I currently have a 3.1 gpa because I received a D in one of my classes last semester and it hurt my gpa. But, I'm retaking it this semester and it should be replaced as an A after this semester. By the end of the year I plan to have at least a 3.4 gpa. I also got a 24 on my act senior year. Can someone please tell me if I will get in or if I have a chance or not? Thank you.

What did you make a D in? What major will you apply for at UT Dallas? Are you including any AP or CLEP credit in the 28 credit hours by the end of the spring semester? Does the 28 include the hours from class you made a D?

It was trigonometry a class that isn’t required for my major. I’m a biology major. Yes the 28 includes everything. I’m taking trig again this semester bc I received a D last semester. I currently have an A.

You are borderline, write an essay and get letters of rec from Sci and/or Math professors. You may want to start on the application ASAP. The natural science classes fill up fast! It can take 4 to 6 weeks to get an admission dec on a complete application. fall class reg started on March 31. The fall financial aid deadline was March 31.

By borderline do you mean I’m more close to not being able to get accepted? I’m applying in May because I’m waiting for my second semester transcript to come through so I can make a better impression. Do you know what kind of grades utd wants for a first year transfer? I heard you only need a 2.5-3.0 to get in with more than 30 hours. I’ll technically have that many hours after the summer.

Yes, borderline to get in for Fall 2014 due to failing math class, number of completed hours and ACT score. It sounds like you could be an auto admit for Spring 2015. Less than 30 hours no assured admission standards, case by case. 30-41: good standing, cumulative GPA 2.5 w/b or better in eng, social sci, math and a core sci. 42 or more hours: good standing, GPA 2.5. Put effort into the application write an essay and get a letter of rec and you most likely will be just fine.

If I’m applying for spring of 2014 what college gpa is recommended? Are you saying I will be fine if I write a essay, give a letter of rec for this spring semester or the spring semester of 2015? Sorry for the questions, but I need all the help I can get so I get in.

Also is it okay to apply in mid May for the spring semester?

I’m sorry did not mean to cause confusion or panic! The lower the number of hours, the bigger the impact a failing grade has on your application. Put the effort into the fall 2014 application because you are borderline. For Fall 2014 - Write an essay, submit a letter of rec and I think you will be ok. Complete as soon as you are done with Spring 2014 at Texas Tech.

What gpa would you recommend me to have by the end of the semester to make my admission away from borderline?

If you have less than 30 hours, over a 3.0. If you have more 30 hours, at least a 2.5

I’m pretty sure you will be accepted. I applied with a gpa of 3.1, 43 hours completed, and had a D on my transcript from my freshman year. I got accepted into the business school about a month ago. Good luck!

You guys are the best! Thanks
