My DD accepted in BMEN and also just got accepted to UT BMEN two weeks ago. We are comparing the cost so having realistic cost is important.
Received official COA from UTD
Tuition: $8017.00
Room and Meals: $6152 (COMET19) $2202+Room (Canyon Creek 2X2) $3950 = $6152
Books: $600
Transport $770
Personal: $1125
Total $16664X2 = $33328
Anyone with kids already in UTD do you know if kid will need a car?
My son lived on campus for 1 1/2 years and did not have a car, but he did have 3 other roommates and the one with the car was driving them around. I think there are shuttles that takes you to the local Walmart if you need to get supplies.
There is just no way compare undergraduate life at UTD pre-2010 to what it is now. The first residence hall opened in Spring 2009. The freshman class growth (and importantly retention) was very slow throughout the 1990s.
Growth had to happen to justify the dorms. Once freshman students could live on campus in dorms - you begin to have a more traditional college feel. School song, mascot, the rock and other traditions and student organizations began to take hold.
To put it in perspective UTD is where the University of Texas at Austin was around 1940 in terms of age.
I also think it important to note that Texas is a huge state - and student opinion of the school is probably different if you come from Denton, Collin, Dallas or Tarrant counties VS Harris, Travis, Williamson, Bexar or Fort Bend. And that is just the urban/suburban areas.
I canât tell you how many people I have heard say UTD has a ton of international students. That is simply not true at the undergraduate level. Itâs around 4 or 5 percent. Now at the graduate level you have around 45%. Itâs like the âcommuter collegeâ reputation. Sure there are a lot of Dallas area students that live at home, but the experience of the thousands of students that live on campus is very different.
I think that UTD is very much what you make it. The students I know that attend UTD live on campus, are very actively involved in social and academic organizations and have a very rewarding college experience.
@FriscoDad - My daughter maybe used her car once a week. Her two roommates did not have cars. And the other 4 kids from our HS did not have cars. Basically, out of the 7 UTD students I know - there was only one car. I do not think a car is needed at all in the dorms freshman year.
Date applied 10/12/2020. Accepted Major Biomedical Engineering
SAT 1580 Rank 3/398.
Under Financial Aid in Galaxy it still shows âThere is no financial aid information foundâ. That for sure means no AES right?
Hi all, I have joined this forum for some advice from any students who are enrolled in School of Economic,Political and Policy Sciences. My daughter has been accepted into BA International Political Economy. She has been accepted into SMU and other good schools too and we are waiting for the financial aid offers. My concern is that UTD is know for its STEM programs, but not Liberal Arts. Just need insights on this. We didnât get any financial aid except loan offers mentioned in the letter.
When were you admitted? For those admitted in November, UTD is making AES decisions in January (now). So, you may still hear from them. We are waiting as well. You can read their announcement at the top of their AES page.
SMU is way better for Social Sciences and Liberal Arts. UTD is big on computer science 3300 out of 20000 undergraduates, the next would be business. Within business their Accounting is the best. I will say even UTA (Arlington) is better.
UTD becomes financial âreachâ for me, it costs more than UT Austin and A&M.
Applied 10/12/2020, accepted 10/14/2020. SAT scores sent back in 11th grade during our high school SAT day. Most of the students got AES in my HS received their decision last month.
Got reply yesterday âAES decision is finalâŠâ and typical response like âwe continue review students admitted after 11/1âŠâ I am not so confident about my stat anymore. UT Austin even though auto admit but still waiting for major decision. All LORs were sent via Common App in October to all the schools I applied.
Similar to my situation, if you do not get AES from UTD, then it is a $30K a year college. By now unless you are expecting NMF letter, UTD is the most expensive public college in Texas. Not because it is prestigious, but due to the fact that the 75% full paying students paying for the AES of the 25% remaining students, who are mostly STEM.
I am from Frisco so I visited UTD, UTA, TCU, UNT and SMU. SMU by far have the best experience, the next one is UTA (Arlington). UTD has many new buildings gearing for CS and engineering I donât feel any presence of Liberal Arts or Social Science. It feels like visiting some companiesâ headquarters instead of a college. The âfeelingâ may not be important for students who are career oriented though.
I agree with you 100%. Looks like you are from Frisco High school(looking at your name:) We are from Frisco too. I know it is 31 k for us for UTD which is quite expensive being it a public college. We are totally dependent on need based financial aid for SMU. I have no idea if they are going to give a decent financial aid package. We could visit only 2 colleges, UTD and SMU before the pandemic started. I was quite impressed by SMU. UTD was good but they didnât even talk about their liberal arts program. We know it is well know for STEM. We couldnât visit TCU, were very much interested in doing the tour though. Did you get any financial aid info from SMU? My daughter didnât receive any merit aid, may be a an SAT score of 1350 with 3.56 unweighted gpa and 4.56 weighted gpa were not good enough for merit aid scholarship though other parts of her application were stronger. Thanks for getting back with the info.
Most private colleges stress more on need based aid. A few like Baylor and SMU still gives out merit based but you will need to be very top. Thatâs why most private college requires parents to fill out FAFSA and CSS. CSS really digs deep into financial profile to calculate families income and amount the families can afford to contribute. CSS data has to match FAFSA data.
UTD AES is supposedly merit based so nothing required. UTD does take FAFSA but doesnât need CSS.
