Hey guys!
I am an auto admit to UT and am pretty sure I am going there so I have started looking at dorms. From what I’ve read my favorite is SRD because of the homey feel, but I’m not sure about it for a few reasons. For the people that are living here this year or previously lived here, are the rooms extremely small? Like is it hard to fit all of your stuff in it? I am looking at the sunroom double, corner suite, or side suite. Also, how are the community baths? I did want a private bath but am open to community baths as long as they are really clean. How is the food here? I have read good reviews on this but I don’t eat a lot of meat so will this be an issue? I am planning on majoring in business, so is it a long walk to the business school? I am also looking at Dobie because of how spacious the rooms are and San Jac so would one of these be better or worse? Thank you so much for your help and sorry I have so many questions.
We recently toured SRD. They do not meet special dietary requirements there. The rooms we saw had two twin beds and two small tables that served as desks with a couple of simple shelves above the 'desks". We were not impressed. The bathrooms were nice. My oldest is a pescatarian and lactose intolerant. They said they would not be able to meet her dietary needs or choices. We chose to have her live on campus instead. The on campus dining at Jester and Kinsolving both do a great job of meeting both her needs and choices for diet. She has a roommate and they share a connecting bath with two suite mates. She said it is working out just fine. Good luck!
Current Freshman daughter lives in SRD. She loves it. She has a regular double. It’s one of the smaller ones and all of her stuff fits fine. She purposely chose this because the community baths are so much nicer than the in room baths. She has the sink in her room which is nice. Food is best you will get in any dorm. Can’t speak to food issues though. She does a lot of walking for her freshman classes as they are all over campus but she likes the exercise. She loves the study areas too - quiet and safe. She never looked at another dorm. Really one of the best places to live as a Freshman female, IMHO. I assume you are already on the waiting list? If not, don’t wait.
I loved, loved, loved SRD. It’s a beautiful place to live. If I had a daughter going to UT, I would insist that she live there.
They are having a reunion the last Saturday in October, and my mom and I will both go. When I was there a few years ago, I found a photo from the 50s hanging in a downstairs hall. It’s of the pool when it was new. My mom is in the photo!! So cool.
I also stayed in Kinsolving one summer, for a high school program. No comparison to SRD.
