My son was invited to the Honors Colloquium (http://www.utexas.edu/ugs/hc) at UT Austin in late July. What an awesome selection of classes to attend and activities.
Who else is in?
My son choose a STEM set of classes:
Texas and the Dark Side (of the Universe)
The Honors Panel
Spaceflight: Fact vs. Fiction
Cockrell School of Engineering
Life and Death Decisions
The Helimak Laboratory
Physics Circus
What was the selection process for this? I know a lot of people with good test scores who didn’t get in but a lot of people with bad test scores who did get in.
From http://www.utexas.edu/ugs/hc/invited
“Most students invited to participate are identified using data provided by the Student Search Service of the CollegeBoard. They come primarily from Texas high schools, but selected out-of-state schools are also represented.”
My son had pretty good stats:
36 ACT
2320 SAT
228 PSAT
I actually called. UT buys a list from College Board for a particular test date. If you didn’t happen to test on that date, odds are not high that you would be considered. = son: 2350 SAT/ 232 PSAT- no invite.
Wow! That explains a lot @bookmom7. Thanks for the insight. It’s a great event if you’re able to participate but nothing to stress about if you can’t go, don’t get an invitation, or whatever. One of my children was invited and the other was not. Neither attended the Honors Colloquium and both are now in Honors programs at UT. And we know someone who was invited to (and attended) the Honors Colloquium who later did not get into UT.
My S who graduated high school in 2012 was invited based on his PSAT score. He did not take the SAT until June of Junior year so could not have been based on that as his invite came in May and he had not yet taken his SAT. Also his GPA/rank was not that great. My D on the other hand has a PSAT of 229 and March SAT of 2200 and has not received anything. And she has a much higher GPA and rank Also is the invite only by e mail now- no snail mail?
@goingnutsmom we received an email invitation only. A previous email to the H.C coordinator told our son “to watch your email”, so I assume email only.
Thanks for the info. I told her to check her e mail but she says nothing there from them. That’s OK. That’s fine- she will be out of state anyway doing a summer camp. But I was curious as to how/why they invite the students they select. Is your S going?
He has no idea what he wants to do, he loves learning and enjoys most subjects. This great, until you are trying to narrow down a list of colleges to apply to. So these program are great in giving kids a better idea of the schools. (Especially since they are free).
Yes, my D got the TAMU invite but refuses to attend. She did an engineering camp there a while back and was weirded out by the assortment of traditions they have on campus. Plus, it was just too conservative for her. To each her own, I guess. Have your S go to Raising Canes for the chicken fingers. Delicious stuff.
