UT McCombs OOS: Any Chance?

It doesn't seem as if the UT Austin board is very active so I'll try my chances on this board. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm looking to add another match school to my list and the major I'm interested in pursuing is business. UT Austin McCombs seems like a great school that I should consider, but the only problem is that I am from out of state. From the website, UT makes it seem as if it is nearly impossible for an out of state student to be admitted to McCombs. I believe I saw some ridiculous statistic which I guess the university takes pride in that they only accepted 20 out of state students. Is that correct? Please let me know what my chances would be for McCombs.

Out of State: California

GPA: 3.97 (unweighted)
Rank: N/A (but have taken a rigorous course load)
ACT: 32 (retaking)
SAT 1 (Best Combined): 2180 (Writing: 780; CR: 710; Math: 690)
SAT 1 (Best Single Sitting): 2090 (Writing: 690; CR: 710; Math: 690)

ECs (few but very dedicated which will shine through in my application so I don't think it will hurt me)

Speech and Debate - qualified for nationals, numerous awards, etc
Boy Scouts - Eagle Scout, many leadership positions

Community Service - 60+ hours

I'm from Texas and looking at McCombs as well. Texans pride themselves on being Texans, quite simply, so I wouldn't be surprised that the out of state stats were low. I remember reading that the average SAT score at McCombs is something around 1350, so if you raise your SATs a bit more so wouldn't hurt and have good ECs, I'm sure you have a pretty good shot of getting in. Supposedly, they have lots of problems with excessive partying, but if you get into the honors program, you're "made for life" as one person I know told me.

Thanks newguy123, your post was very insightful. Do you happen to know what the average ACT score at McCombs is? Because I believe that my ACT score is superior to my SAT score especially if McCombs disregards the SAT writing score to a great extent which is what I think they do.

young_one i'm not sure about ACT score but BHP's Sat score is much higher than McCOmbs regular, BHP's is around 1400's.
Being from oos its going to be extremly difficult since only 10% ppl can be oos in business, but senate r changing the laws so i'm not sure yet.
avarage class rank for regular McCOmbs is 2.8% and for BHP is .8%
McCombs acceptes probably around 800 ppl each yr mabye little more so about 80 are going to be oos with current laws.
If you can't get into McCOmbs but u can in ut then u can do ut liberal arts and transfer as long as you have gpa 3.7 and above and fullfill some requirements.

The stats on mccombs' website show that the most recent incoming class had 38 out-of-state students who enrolled, with 735 in-state students. There could be a lot more who were accepted however, as I imagine that many out-of-staters decide not to attend, but yes, the percentage is quite low.

Thank you. Anyone else?
