I accidently posted this in “what are my chances” before I saw this category, so here’s my question again:
I am curious how likely I am to get any scholarship money from UT. I have a 1460 SAT, a 35 ACT, a class rank of 9/~400, and a GPA of 4.4. Previously, I have been President and Parliamentarian of my class, as well as an active member in Student Council. I was also in the top choir, and now am on the Mayor’s Youth Council and serve as VP of NHS. I am a National Merit Commended Scholar, as well as an AP Scholar with honor, and by the time I graduate will have finished 13 AP courses. Also, I don’t know how scholarships from TAMU compare to UT, but I recieved $3,000 a year to TAMU, plus an additional one time $2,000. So far, all I know is I’ve gotten accepted to McCombs, and my financial aid package only contains loans.
UTexas is really only giving need based aid now. I think the only exception is the 40 Acres award. If i were you, I wouldn’t expect any money from them.
TAMU offers merit in hopes of poaching some of UT’s top applicants.
What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay per year? If they’ll pay UT’s costs, then go there. If they’ll only pay the remaining costs of TAMU, then go there.
Did you apply anywhere else that gives you money?
Awww… I was hoping for a different answer, but thank you!
My parents will not pay for any of my college because they paid their own way/went for free, and I received a full ride to UTA, which is much closer to home (which makes my mom happy).
I have applied to other schools, such as Baylor and SMU, but they all leave me with around $20k/year.
I wouldn’t hold your breath for your UT. Other than 40 Acres (which has already been announced I believe) there are smaller Honors based scholarships. Did you apply to Honors?
Parents are frequently surprised that costs have changed so dramatically from the 70’s and 80s when they went to school. Will they pay nothing towards college?
Wish you would’ve applied to schools that are known to give merit. You would have full tuition at a few schools with those stats and you could’ve taken out the minimum student loan. Your leftover costs would’ve been close to 5-10K which might have been more agreeable to your parents.
Regretfully, I did not apply to any honors programs at UT. My parents will only bridge the gap between scholarships and cost if its below ~5,000, and will likely only be a loan, just one that doesn’t carry any interest.
@Coco_2000 so what are your costs at each school? Which one will be more affordable?
UT and A&M are notoriously stingy with scholarships. If your parents aren’t paying, it sounds like the choice is already made I would go for the full ride at UTA because you’re right in the middle of DFW. You have internships and job prospects all over the place.
@Coco_2000 - you might get more responses if you post in the UT Austin section. The threads here all pertain the other UT schools.
Thank you for all of your advice! @carachel2 @coolguy40 @mom2collegekids
lol, thank @momoftres, I didn’t even know I put it in this category… I’m kinda new if you couldn’t tell.
