Hello all, I am a freshman electrical engineering student at the University of Houston. I would like to attend UT austin, and I will do this by transferring. I was a weak student in high school, so I could not get in first hand. After this first semester, I will more than likely hold a 4.0 GPA. Since I am in the process of completing 30 hrs, my spring grades will also factor in to the admissions decision. I seem to have a decent shot, since many of my friends transferred after first year with a decent GPA. However, here comes the problem that I am greatly concerned about. Since this was my first semester, I was trying to settle in and did not have the time to join any extracurriculars. I however, did do swimteam all four years of high school and also club swimteam. I also do not have previous work experience but do have some community service. I fear the lack of extracurriculars is really going to make a dent in my application here. Any help, tips, and chances of getting in would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone and happy holidays! Freshman almost done with first semester straight out of high school(2014 grad). Also, does AP credit count towards the transferrable hours?

Actually, I didn’t even apply in HS

You are under the category of External Transfer Student:

<a href=“External Transfer”>External Transfer;

I am pretty sure that your grades and classes would be significantly more important than EC’s. As far as how much weight the EC’s carry, you could try asking that question to the engineering advising department. I believe the AP credit would likely count towards transferable credit but that is also something that you would want to ask in your email. The email is on the right side of the page that I linked above. I don’t honestly know whether or not you would include anything from high school or not as a college freshman since I was not in that position. If you feel like some of the questions you want to ask are stupid, you could consider using a random email address.

As far as joining orgs, it should be very easy to join orgs at UH. There’s a nice list here:

<a href=“- Get Involved”>https://uh.collegiatelink.net/organizations

I would recommend glancing over all 588 of those orgs. I don’t think it’d take more than an hour. Write down the name of every single org that sparks any slight interest at all and then go back and read the descriptions of those orgs after you finish with the 588. Many of those orgs have facebook and/or twitter pages so I’d check there after reading the description if you want more information. There is no problem joining an org in the spring. I am not sure how much it’ll help your application so I hope you get a good answer from someone there. That would be the easiest way to join an org if you choose to do that though.
