I’m a senior in high school deciding weather to attend UT or at ASU’s honor college. I’m in state in Texas so it would be cheaper however I got capped and I would have to study my first year at UTA then major in economics when I want to major in business (bc McCombs is almost impossible to get into). My other option is to attend Barrett ASU and get to study business at the honors college. UT is a better school and will be cheaper but ASU I can attend all 4 years and study my first choice.
Any opinions on what I should do?
Study business at ASU Barrett Honors College.
If unhappy after a year at ASU, would you be able to transfer to UT-Austin ?
Yes but I risk the possibility of not getting in
Is there a significant cost difference for ASU versus UT ?
yes since I’m from Texas UT would be a few thousand cheaper
If the cost difference is just a few thousand dollars, then ASU-Barrett Honors may be the better choice because you can major in business.
You may take the first two economics courses & decide against majoring in econ at UT. If so, then what ?
I’ve already taken a college macroeconomic class and did extremely well but if I end up wanting to change I can always apply to McCombs or transfer to a different school
Will I be able to find a good job with an economics degree?
Yes. Generally the biggest issue with an Econ degree vs a BBA is access to the Business School Career Center. Some B Schools only allow their own students to interview with companies that are doing on campus recruiting. I don’t know how it works at t.u.
How will you pay the difference?
My recommendation would be, unless it’s through a big parental loan, to attend ASU Honors then reassess; then try to transfer to UT either for business or economics if ASU doesn’t work. You’ll have to maintain good grades at ASU (keep parting to the weekends, go to office hours) and the writing center) but cap’ed students also have to keep their grades up and don’t have the advantage of Barrett support.
