UT vs. TAMU

(If you see the same post in another section, I apologize. I am a new user and being unfamiliar with the site, I posted my question under the wrong topic. I couldn’t find a way to delete the wrong one either.)

Now that all my decisions have come out, it boils down to UT Austin and Texas A&M.

I am majoring in CS, and I have made the Engineering Honors in Texas A&M, but did not get into any honors at UT.

My central question: Does Engineering Honors at A&M make up or surpass its difference with UT?

Besides that, does anyone else know bonus benefits of either college? E.g. I know UT has the Freshman Research Initiative, which I am applying for now; does TAMU have a similar program? Also, how much AP credits does each college accept & how likely is it to get good professors in each college & do surrounding internships prefer one school over the other & does one school have more internship opportunities in and around it than the other.

Money and landscape are irrelevant. (just curious: College Station isn’t as boring as people make it to be right?)

If anyone can answer any one of these questions, I will be extremely grateful. Thank you!

I can help with the AP credit…

@chercheur thanks for the info. However they don’t show the amount of APs each takes. Also do you know if you can get priority registration if you take ~11 APs total?

First, I would suggest you look at the degree plans for each school and see which of your AP credits will be accepted. Students are often surprised to find out that not all AP credits can be used.

Second, since the schools are near one another, visit both and get all of your questions answered.

Third, you posted your question under “University of Toronto” so you may not get a lot of responses.

Lastly, UT is the better-known school for computer science. Good luck!

At UT, are you direct admit to CS? But note that that even if you are, you have to maintain a GPA higher than 2.0 to stay in the CS major.

But TAMU requires a competitive admission process to get into your major, though 3.5 GPA is automatic admit.

Check out the degree plans for each school (links below). TAMU’s program is through the College of Engineering, so you will be taking the same classes as the first year engineering students (Chemistry for Engineers, for example).

Texas A&M and UT are virtually identical in rankings. Both programs are also more/less identical. The only difference is that Texas A&M is much more shrewd with their admissions criteria, which has proven successful in poaching top students from UT. It really comes down to preference more than anything else. UT is a more liberal metropolitan school, while A&M is much more Texas conservative. Hence the rivalry. Either way, you’re getting a top notch education. Just take a tour of both campuses.

Both schools are more or less identical in their “rankings” and their CS programs. Both schools have great job placement opportunities too. It really comes down to preference, you can’t go wrong either way. Do you want to be a Longhorn or an Aggie? UT is more metro-liberal, A&M is more Texas conservative.
