@midatlantic2012 Who are you addressing the comment to? This is a public board. If you attend TJ you can get the stats informally from Naviance. You can also do some research, but I don’t know if it is broken down by school. http://research.schev.edu/enrollment/b8_admissions_locality.asp
@EJaneWench Emory is a private institution, which typically offer more aid than public universities. UVA doesn’t offer merit aid to in-state students either. The running joke in-state is that your instate tuition is enough of a gift. This is true for all VA schools. As a result, many really talented residents wind up going elsewhere.
FWIW-I found the net price calculator to be very accurate. Disappointing, but accurate. Good luck with your decision!
Asked this question a while ago but thought I’d try again. Anybody have Federal Work Study as part of their aid package and if so thoughts on options at UVA? My older daughter has a federal work study job at another school tutoring in a city school. It’s a job that she looks forward to and is proud to be a part of. Other schools (ex.Holy Cross) put the first year FWS students in the cafeteria serving their peers. Not something that we want for our daughter. FWS is a big ($4,000) part of her package at UVA. Happily heading to DOTL next week so I am sure more answers await there.
Has anyone not received their financial aid yet? The acceptance letter said it should be available by April first
@emasatruc I spoke to them last week and I was told that awards are loaded into the portals on Tuesdays.
@RelocatedYankee, the work-study positions are across the spectrum. I had an engineering student on a panel yesterday who is doing research as her work-study job and I know students who prefer something low-key where they might be able to get reading done when it isn’t busy (working the desk at the library or the info desk at Newcomb). I believe enrolled students can log into a system (Handshake) to browse the posted positions.
@RelocatedYankee My son didn’t get FWS as part of his UVA package, but did get it as part of other packages. II spoke with a neighbor this weekend whose son attends UVA and does FWS and is having a positive experience. He hopes to pick the same work back up next year. The campus is large enough that there should be a good variety of jobs supported. When I was in college, all we had on campus was food service. Although honestly, my son has said he would take any job he could get to help defray costs. Even w/o FWS as part of his “package” I know he will work PT throughout school. It’s just a fiscal necessity. THere are a lot of jobs in the area, even for kids without cars.
Has anyone else received the University Achievement Award Scholarship or know how it affects financial aid? I just got my preliminary award yesterday and, if the scholarship is just added to my aid package, my family will not have to take out a loan or have another job. However, I have read that UVA uses most scholarships to replace loans and the AccessUVA grant, so, if it just replaces the grant I received, it would most likely be cheaper to go to another school, although my heart is set on UVA.
Call the financial aid office so everything is clear for your situation
My daughter, a 2017 graduate, received the UAA. It pays tuition and fees for all four years as long as academic requirements are met. Dean Valerie Gregory in the UVA Outreach Office may be able to answer some of your questions. Congratulations - it is an amazing award!
Has every FA applicant received his or her preliminary fin aid package? My DS has submitted all the required docs by 3/1, and there is ‘No’ to-do-list on his SIS. But, he did not yet receive his aid notification. Any information will be appreciated.
@emastruc Did you get your preliminary aid package? Does it correspond to your net price calculator? Thanks.
@LilaLou Thank you so much! I am very honored (and surprised) to have received it! I have emailed SFS and am waiting for their reply, so hopefully I will know how it impacts my financial situation early next week!
@bloomdad1 I know a few people who have not yet received their package, so you should not worry! However, if you are still concerned next week, you could possibly try to call or email financial services. Also, I would probably look at the SFS Facebook and Twitter accounts for updates on when packages are released. Hope everything comes soon!
@HopefullyAHoo I really appreciate your kind info. I am much relieved. I may call SFS next week to check the status. .
I want to give my 2c on some of the misconceptions about admissions to TJ kids
-
TJ students are getting undue advantage in UVA admissions
TJ is not one county school (as most of you know), it has students from all high schools of Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington counties. Within school, students are going through tough curriculum, competing and compared with brightest from all these counties. One way students in TJ are at disadvantage in UVA admissions compared to being in their home schools. If they would stay in their base school, their chances are going to be much better than being in TJ. But students are not joining in TJ to get automatic admission into UVA (see next point). -
TJ students are taking most spots
TJ stats over last 3 years (from Naviance) and their yield rates are much lower than average yield of UVA (which is around 60% for Virginia residents). That means they are getting better opportunities in other colleges. So really they are not taking away opportunity of other VA students.
Class size: around 450
2017 - 342 (applied), 191 (accepted), 65 (enrolled), yield rate: 34%
2016 - 348 (applied), 224 (accepted), 80 (enrolled), yield rate: 36%
2015 - 304 (applied), 191 (accepted), 82 (enrolled), yield rate: 43%
So proud, my international S finally decided on UVA. Had narrowed choices from Cal Berkeley, Emory, Notre Dame, UVA and Villanova. Wants to study economics so we visited schools, spoke with students and alumni. He made a very informed choice among the last two of Villanova and UVA. I must also congratulate UVA admissions for the incredible level of transparency and communications. I think it means a lot to the students when making their decisions.
My son just received the University Acheivement Scholarship on Thursday. It is a full tuition and fees scholarship for 4 years.
Amazing news! Must be a great day in your household. Congrats to your son!
asij2018, UVA is an amazing place for college education. The campus is one amongst the most beatiful campueses in the USA. Congratulations!
