Hello, I’m an in state student who really wants to go to UVA. I decided really recently that I wanted to be a nurse practitioner instead of a physician, but I’m worried about applying to the nursing school because I don’t know if I’ll get in. I heard the College of arts and sciences is easier to be admitted, so I was wondering if I should I apply there then transfer? I have a 4.384 GPA, 1520 SAT, a few extracurriculars including a job for 3 years and being secretary of my schools key club but not that much, and I have only about 76 hours of hospital volunteering experience. Thank you!
Sorry sorry I meant 4.348. Btw it’s weighted and on a 4.0 scale
Apply to Arts and Science and then transfer if you think you won’t get in. I’m pretty sure you will get in though if you tried.
At some colleges, it is very hard to transfer to nursing. You should find that our before you plan a strategy. UVa’s nursing program is extremely competitive.
I would apply to the Nursing school and see if you get in.
I’m not even sure how a transfer would work if you went to the College. Nursing schools usually follow a strict curriculum from first to fourth year. Additionally, I don’t think you can sign up for some nursing classes if you are in the college. You might even have to stay an extra year if you transferred.
If you know you want to do Nursing apply for the SON.
I’m not sure what other schools in VA have a nursing program, but I’d check them out as well as nursing is competitive.
I would also recommend looking at the Physicians Assistant programs at places like JMU and EVMS.
Good luck!
Almost all nursing programs in the southeast US are 2-2 programs. That means you apply during your sophomore year of college for entry, and it is competitive. UVa is a 4 year nursing program that is direct entry from college.
I’d apply to multiple colleges, including both direct entry and 2-2. It may be worth considering some out of state direct entry programs. There are many in PA. If you are competitive for UVa, you should be able to get merit aid for many other less selective colleges.
There is an active nursing section on CC, under majors. One of the threads is a listing of all of the colleges that offer nursing admission directly from high school. Because so many 2-2 programs are highly competitive for entry, it can reduce your stress level if you attend a direct entry program.
Thank you!
That’s a really good point I didn’t think about that. I really appreciate all your advice! I’ll defiitely look into more schools because I was originally only applying to 3.
