UVA Early Action - Decisions Only - Class of 2023

At some point between now and January 31, early action applicants should receive their decisions.

UVA considers very important: rigor, rank, GPA, recommendations, character, state residency
UVA considers important: SAT, essay, extracurriculars, talent

We will assume that everyone thinks their submitted essay and recommendations were good and not ask about that. ?

Dean J will announce when a decision is coming. Follow her on Twitter at @UVaDeanJ

This thread is for EARLY ACTION DECISIONS ONLY. There is another thread for discussion.

Any hooks? definitely attending gov school, UVA acceptance rate for kids from my school is about 95%.

Straight up rejected. 1500 sat. 4.3 gpa and 4.7 junior year. Ib classes and everything. High level sports and orchestra. Also legacy. My heart is broken. Wasn’t planning on attending but i have cherished this school for my whole life and to see this happen is devastating

EARLY ACTION DECISION: ACCEPTED
Planned Major/College: Architecture

State Residency: Out-of-state
SAT/ACT: 35 ACT
GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.77W
Rigor: Medium, large Texas public school, but best public school in the near area, and I took all the APs I could and did well
Rank: 22/784
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Extras/Volunteer work/Talents/Jobs: Marching band leadership, symphony orchestra, internship with city, fast food job
Demonstration of Good Character: Rec letters from teachers who regard me very highly
Any hooks? Not that I know of

Thoughts on why you received that decision: I think my essays were very well-written and obviously GPA and the ACT score helped, but I’m still shocked and very happy as this is my first acceptance outside of auto-admit from UT Austin.

EARLY ACTION DECISION: DEFERRED
Planned Major/College: Arts and Sciences (Prospective Business Major)

State Residency: VA (in state)
SAT/ACT: 1490 (700 RW, 790 M)
SAT Subjects: Math 2 (710), USH (700)
GPA: 4.2 W, got a few Bs junior year.
Rigor: 9 APs (including senior year)
Rank: no rank at my school, but I’m guessing top 10-15%.
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Extras/Volunteer work/Talents/Jobs: Started my own business, president of few clubs, head language instructor, etc.
Demonstration of Good Character: I don’t understand what this means.
Any hooks?: First generation

Thoughts on why you received that decision:
Sort of disappointed, but I will get over it. I kind of expected it though…I really wish I applied regular decision instead. The essays I did over winter break were x3 better than the ones I submitted for UVA EA. My stats were borderline, and my essays were just average. If I submitted my later, better essays, I believe I would’ve had a better shot.
I got a good amount of Bs junior year so that probably brought me down. However, my senior year grades are straight As and one B, so I’m hoping my first semester grades will help me out. I’m really hoping for the best.

To wrap up, I don’t feel too down. I applied to 15 schools, so this is just one decision. I believe that what is for me will be for me
Good luck to everyone who got deferred, and a big congrats to everyone who got in! Go do big things!

(forgot to add on my post I was accepted, whoops!)

EARLY ACTION DECISION: DEFERRED
Planned Major/College: Nursing / School of Nursing

State Residency: Virginia
SAT/ACT: 1290
GPA: 4.1
Rigor: 8 APs, the rest nearly all honors, one university class
Rank: Top third at top high school. Would likely be about top 15% elsewhere.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female

Extras/Volunteer work/Talents/Jobs: Varsity sports, lots of volunteer work, two year internship, interesting part-time job, completed quite a bit of medical-related curriculum out of school, accepted to and completed leadership summer program at major university, sports coach to younger kids

Demonstration of Good Character: Peer Mentor, self-started own charity program, in selective leadership program at school, at least one of her recommendations stressed character as being perfect for nursing, NHS, awards in sports, various clubs

Any hooks? All the extras above, plus demonstrated interest in medical field, plus lots of shadowing medical professionals.

Thoughts on why you received that decision:
She has solid academics and outstanding extras and is a good candidate for the program (middle 50% for UVA nursing SAT was 1230-1440 last year), but there are a LOT of good candidates and she is competing for one of only about 40 spots allocated to in-state nursing students. Hoping that her class rank doesn’t prevent her admission.

Her first semester GPA will likely be a 4.7 with four APs and two honors classes, so that should help. Fingers crossed for later admission.

EARLY ACTION DECISION: Accepted!!!
Planned Major/College: Pre-Med/Arts and Sciences

State Residency: North Carolina
SAT/ACT: 35 ACT (Superscored)

Extras/Volunteer work/Talents/Jobs: Co-President and Co-Founder of Social Justice Club, Captain of Quiz Bowl, Senior Honor Council Member, others ECs; worked at a warehouse during the summers
Demonstration of Good Character: Good letters of rec I guess?
Any hooks? Legacy

Thoughts on why you received that decision: I think the legacy was a big help, as it put me in the same pile as in-state students. I really loved the essays I wrote and I’m so happy that this was one of my first decisions!

EARLY ACTION DECISION: Accepted!!
Planned Major/College: Human Biology

State Residency: VA
ACT: 32 composite
GPA: school doesn’t calculate but around 3.8uw 4.3w

Gender: Female
Extras/Volunteer work/Talents/Jobs: Hospital volunteer for 3 years, tutoring for a long time, summer camp counselor, leader/involved in a bunch of different clubs, 2 sports all through hs, diversity conferences
Demonstration of Good Character: very involved in diversity programs,
Any hooks? URM in stem, college prep highschool, very rigorous courseloads

Thoughts on why you received that decision: My school is a huge feeder for UVA, also UVA is really lacking black students, especially female and in stem. I think my essays were pretty good and unique, but honestly I thought I would get deferred or even rejected bc so many people from my highschool applied, including a girl who is like an exact copy of me, and my grades were good throughout hs, but junior year I ended with two B’s. I’m incredibly thankful though, so excited!!!

Accepted

All in all I’d say 9.5/10 EC’s
Demonstration of Good Character: Good? Lol this seems entirely too subjective.
Any hooks? URM, low-income

Thoughts on why you received that decision: No doubt in-state status helped. I was deferred from Stanford REA and accepted to UTK thus far. I know that UVA loves those in the top 10% of their class so I think my rank certainly helped in my decision as well. legacy at UVA (both maternal grandparents and mom went to UVA)

Thoughts on why you received that decision:
honestly pretty surprised, being 3rd generation legacy, with a very strong SAT score and academics and a great internship, but I think it might have been due to no leadership roles held, and not much community service. However, I’m not too upset because I’ve already gotten into some other great schools.
