UVA Early Action Thread: Class of 2023

@LANYLA It varies a lot from school to schoool. Several schools my D applied to announced their EA decision date and time in advance, and stuck to it to the minute! Unfortunately not UVA - last EA we are waiting on.

i’ve heard that they’re coming out today, the 25th! i’m not completely sure though, but good luck to you (:

So often we hear comments like they got 15% rise in applications, so it’s like they are doing a huge favor by giving out decisions early. “Let them work”. No one’s even talking with a University of such a big scale, they should account for this rise and hire or take help from existing staff by paying overtime to them. All I want the university is to be a little be more transparent in giving the students update about the progress, if it is (or is not) going to be early (given that they chose to use “by Jan 31” and have been traditionally confusing students by releasing on random dates). What I mean to suggest is that for a University this big, there is more to be expected.

What were the other EAs?

Until Dean J announces that the decisions are coming out on a particular date, everything is speculation. Let’s not confuse people by posting rumors.

As of 8 am on 1/25, Dean J has not said it’s today. Perhaps she will make an announcement later, perhaps it will be another day between now and 1/31.

We will have to wait an see.

well if decisions come out today, good luck to everyone! it’ll be fine…we’re all going to end up at the best place for us.

Having gone through the admission process once with my oldest daughter, I found that Dean J and UVA are by far the most transparent and open with information sharing that we dealt with - large school or small. I don’t understand the notion that applicants are entitled to “progress updates” or advance notice of an early release of decisions. Getting decisions early is a courtesy, in my opinion.

I completely agree that Dean J has been providing updates and trying to calm us down. In my opinion a professional university should announce a set date and stick with it and manage resources to fulfill that commitment.

I understand that it is a courtesy if they give out earlier than promised, but the randomness causes stress in some people. It is not a birthday party or a personal announcement, but a professional announcement. That is why a set date helps.
I understand that opinions may differ

I understand. I found that only one of the colleges we dealt with had a set date and stuck with it. The rest notified that decisions were coming on the day they were released. Maybe trying to guess, knowing that decisions are usually released early, is what causes the stress. BTW good luck to your son/daughter. I hope it is worth the anticipation for them.

@eager2019 We hired four new counselors last year and would have LOVED to hire more! Getting the budget to hire just one new staff member, getting a new position approved, getting the job posted, conducting a legal hiring process with multiple rounds, doing background checks, making a job offer to a candidate, negotiating with said candidate, setting a hire date, having a new hire go through orientation, and then training the new hire, often takes months.

We know our office is small compared to our peers and we know that plenty with our volume have shortened their applications. I don’t enjoy pulling 15-18 hour days or working on every holiday, but that’s what it takes until there’s a major change. I’m sharing this to help you understand the wait. I am not fishing for a response.

Good luck!

Is there a chance it comes out Saturday/Sunday? Or will it only come out on a business day?

UVA has said and posted it will most likely be next week. Pretty sure it won’t be earlier. Everyone relax and enjoy your weekend

Last year decisions came out Thursday, January 25 and Dean J announced it at around 3:00 pm that afternoon that decisions were coming that evening.

While that does not tell us what will happen this year, it does tell us that announcements are not necessarily made at the beginning of the day.

So the speculation is either today or sometime next week? If today, what time?

I think Dean J’s post this morning would indicate that we probably should not expect them before next week, but that’s just my interpretation.

Yes, so looking at so many uncertain (speculating) people, it does seem that it is good if they just give a date and then stick with it without causing confusions/rumors within the community (or provide updates as to whether to look forward for this week or relax on the weekend  )

Best of luck to everyone-today or next week. I also went through this with my D17 (who is in her 2nd year at UVA). I believe she received her decision on a Thursday. UVA will likely let us all know via Twitter on the day of. My son will be on a ski trip bus with about 40-50 other students this afternoon, so I am actually sort of hoping for a release next week.

@eager2019 you have made your point several times, we understand your opinion. I for one appreciate when UVA or other schools release decisions earlier than the specified release date.

@slimjim005 what did Dean J post, and where?

Slimjim005 never mind… I see. Thanks
