Thank you Dean J! My son got accepted yesterday. I really appreciate the hard work you and the rest of the admission team did yesterday. I appreciate it a BIT more since my kid was accepted. As you can see by my screen name, we will now be a ‘house divided.’
There is just one thing bothering me since yesterday morning. Another stressed out poster commented that she hoped she would not have to be stressed all weekend. Your reply that she should wait until Feb 1 to check? Kind of cruel. Especially since you (I suspect) KNEW the announcement was hours away. I’m not saying tell her. I’m not saying tell her anything except ‘We can’t promise anything.’ I’m not saying she had been polite in earlier posts - she hadn’t. But she, like everyone on the forum, was stressed. Everyone reading your posts are stressed. You may have become immune to it after year. It’s pretty much your job description to communicate with the over-stressed. But for each of us the stress is acute and often new. I’m a physician. My patients don’t want me to be dismissive about their hyperchondriasis just because I’ve seen it 1000 times. They want me to treat each of them as if they were my only priority. Your stressed out commenters feel the same.
Stick to your story, but try a bit harder not to be mean or dismissive.
By the way, the chart that you posted on your blog is incorrect - you notified early action Jan 25th last year. That made the stress yesterday even higher for those of us who noticed.
Congratulations to your son @newVTdad . We are a ‘house divided’ as well - although in reverse order -older son was UVA, younger son was Virginia Tech. We had a fun 4 years visiting Charlottesville, then a fun four years visiting Blacksburg!
@newVTdad I totally agree with your comments about @“Dean J”
I also agree with @greatstats. I don’t think having an admissions officer chiming in daily is professional at all. But from what others said, it seems that people enjoy hearing the updates. But she was unnecessarily mean to that poster who was stressed out, and that just left a bad taste in my mouth.
Congrats to all those accepted! Could you please tell us if all these acceptances are Early Action? Our son applied end of December (OOS), wondering when you have those results? Thank you.
As an Alumni and previous Virginian (multi generational) but moved to NC, so daughter applied as OOS, she got flat out denied. Good SAT/ACT’s , 6 AP’s, etc etc. Future alumni fund drive requests are going into the trash.
@newVTdad and @WineLover Longtime lurker here. While I don’t think this forum is necessarily a place to air issues with Dean J, I will say that I too, was taken aback from a few comments on here. I think it is fantastic that she can help applicants and be somewhat transparent, but I have noticed a snippy, sometimes rude tone in posts. It upsets me because I know she is trying to help. It might be better during this hectic time (for EA and regular decisions) for DeanJ not to be a poster on CC, instagram, twitter, etc. And, I agree, it would seem awful strange for a Dean with such a high profile to not know that decisions were coming out later in the day - the same day she made the comment to the poster to wait until February 1. We are all not perfect though.
Deferred, OOS. The portal asks a simple question if he’s still interested and DS clicked on the “yes” button. It also now asked for 7th semester transcript, which will apparently go into their decision process.
@markmil1 Very sorry to hear your OOS legacy daughter was denied. But ,there were many instate kids (and OOS) denied as well. Just too many applications for limited spots. Nothing personal. I actually would not be upset if UVA, as a public Virginia university, did away with legacy preference altogether. But that is just my opinion. All the best to you and your daughter.
Agree that Dean J can be a little “snippy” at times. She is a wonderful resource though, very dedicated and professional . I’m guessing she will take note of some of the comments here going forward. This forum seems lucky to have her!
Son- deferred, college of Arts and science

In state
What state are you in? My son was accepted to both Georgia Tech and UVA for engineering. Georgia Tech is the 4th highest ranked engineering school in the country (tied with CalTech) with world class facilities and corporate partnerships. They are cutting edge in a lot of areas. If you have not been you should visit. It is a great place to get a STEM education and they have a top business school. I understand your disappointment about UVA. It is a special place. Just realize you have another excellent option.
therealnemis - I looked at your writeup on the decisions page and I agree with UVAmom23 - your profile screams Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon or MIT. Georgia Tech is a world class program - be proud!!!
OOS Denied Friday to both UNC and UVA. SAT 1560. ACT 35. GPA 4.25. Taking 11APs. Varsity athlete all 4years, though not recruited. I am blown away that both outright denied me. I thought I’d get waitlisted and deferred, respectively, to each one. Obviously, test scores don’t matter that much. Also, I had been told that being a white male is not good for OOS to either school. Guess that’s true.
