Kg and askmom - colleges today seem to think that the greatest value lies in creating a “well-rounded” class. That apparently means that they want a few accomplished kids of every kind - whether academic, musical, athletic, varied by region, nationality, ethnicity, and whatever else. The superior value of this goal is taken as a given, and leads admissions away from objective measures (which some will argue are not objective) and toward the “holistic” approach. I am not arguing pro or con, just stating what I see.
Mama bear,
Please don’t respond so nastily when a curious kid asks about the timing of decisions or something similar. You and I are probably spending too much time on College Confidential and other internet sources such as Dean J’s blog, but hopefully most of the high school seniors are off the computer living their lives, not obsessed with this stuff. That kid you responded to probably just excitedly (although incorrectly) heard that decisions were coming out, and hopped on here to verify. Of course he didn’t scroll past the last 8 pages of this thread to see if that question had repeatedly been answered (although I would posit that it would be good etiquette to at least read the most recent page of a forum before posing a question). I hope most kids do not follow college blogs daily—they have far healthier things to do! So yes, it may be mildly annoying to be repeatedly asked a basic question—but there’s a solution. If you can’t pleasantly respond, then simply don’t respond!
Waiting is the hardest part! Can’t wait till the end of this month
How about this: let’s not be harsh to each other here, let’s not snap, let’s not lecture and pontificate. Let’s instead use this thread for its intended purpose. Wishing a good day and good luck to everyone.
Dean J posted on Twitter that they are putting in some heavy hours trying to get through the applications. She posted earlier in her blog that they are targeting end-Jan. Wishing them all well as they have a record number of applications. Guess we’ll know, when we know.
Wish everyone good luck!!!
When I read how some parents think admissions should be run I take pause. I can’t imagine the stress and pressure that DeanJ and other admissions people around the country are under. Pressure from parents, applicants, alumni, administration, donors, federal and state government, faculty, media, social activist groups, and probably others I haven’t thought of. All with an agenda on how an incoming class should look and what diversity factors should or shouldn’t be considered. Meanwhile they slog thru thousands of applications and try to make decisions that they feel are equitable knowing that most of the applicants are perfectly qualified, and worthy. I can’t imagine where they even start. I’m glad they do what they do because I would never want to. I appreciate DeanJ’s commitment to commication and taking the time to do what she feels is right.
The admissions process no matter how it’s done is like life. It’s imperfect, and sometimes frustrating and unfair.
Joy and heartbreak are part of life and the admissions process.
We all love our kids and want what’s best for them. On round two of this I realize no matter when the results are released and what they are for my kiddo the sun will rise tomorrow and he’ll be fine no matter what the answer is. Great kids will succeed where they end up and often end up where they need to be.
Does anyone know if UVA admits by major, school/college, or just the entire university?
i think it’s by school/college
They do admit by college/school but I’m not sure if they have set numbers for EA vs RD
Traditionally, UVA has released admission decision in the third week of January. Given that 15% increase in the applicant pool, do you think still this Friday 1/25 is a reasonable guesstimate? Next week is just a 4 day short week.
It becomes especially hard now that we are almost there…
I wish they would be able to provide an “unofficial” statement about the progress rather than just a blanket statement of “before Jan 31”. We get little clearer picture about expectation while they don’t feel stress to deliver. Nothing official, just a progress report type…
ahhhhh the closer it gets the more nervous i feel haha
@akacollege23 same! I’m OOS and hoping for an acceptance, but OOS acceptance rate is super low, so it’s a gamble.
@lemonstress23 i hope you get in!! i’m in-state but i feel like it got so much more competitive this year… I guess we’ll have to wait and see #-o
Everyone always says you need Ivy level stats if you are applying from out of state. Is this a rumor or pretty accurate?
@citymama9 I think it’s a rumor, as long as the applicant has other things going for them. UVA reviews applications holistically, so an applicant’s numbers don’t have to be up to par with the Ivies if said applicant is an overall interesting applicant. However, competitive grades and scores always help, too.
Speaking of Ivy-level stats… How does UVA behaves for those kids? Many schools simply deny admission to kids with very high stats because they think that these kids will never actually go there, and use them as their safeties. How does the UVA do it? Anyone knows admission statistics for high stat kids?
@citymama9 , Not ivy level stats, no. My son got in last year with a 35/1510/ 4.0/ 5.25, OOS. He didn’t apply, and most certainly wouldn’t have gotten into an Ivy.
@citymama9 UVA is very competitive OOS, 75th percentile SATs are believed to be ~1530; they keep undergraduate admissions statistics here: https://ias.virginia.edu/university-stats-facts/undergraduate-admissions
@Essel In what world are a 4.0 and a 35 ACT not considered Ivy-level stats? Cornell’s 75th percentile ACT was a 34 last year
