Hi @CTUR782! There have been times when the decisions have gone up early, but we’ll only release them when everything is done. I don’t think we’d put them out in small batches.
@“Dean J” I see you addressed the 3.5 GPA is generally accurate thing.
Lots of rumors are floating around here that a higher CGPA is needed for incoming sophomore transfers, compared to junior transfers. Can you confirm or deny that?
Have a good weekend. I’m in the library studying like my life depended on it incase I get waitlisted.
It is because typically incoming sophomore students don’t have as much graded credits as incoming juniors do. I would assume a competitive GPA for incoming sophomore student should be around a 3.70 or higher.
That’s not exactly what she said earlier, you don’t have too much of a basis on that. I just wanted to see what Dean J thought you know?
Do the amount of credits you take affect how your gpa is looked upon? Like I took 12 credits first semester and 14 credits this semester since I had a decent amount of general ed completed from high school. Also, does me taking 7 engineering classes(math(I will complete Multivar Calc and Linear Algebra by the end of this year) and science) and 1 English writing class this year help me for getting into SEAS or is the grade the only thing that matters?
@jmh77777 , @CTUR782 is actually pretty spot on. Go through the threads on the transfer blog and you’ll see it’s clearly much more competitive at the sophomore level - more emphasis is taken on your high school grades and your GPA is expected to be higher since you’re still fresher in college and haven’t taken as challenging courses as a junior transfer would have by then…
@iamworried264 What is your major? The number of credits shouldn’t matter as long as you are taking the proper courses that UVA wants. Grades do matter as you are only a Freshman so they would expect a GPA higher than what a incoming Junior would have. Also what school are you currently in right now?
Hi friends! i know i have been on in recent past, but i was wondering if someone could look at my stats and chance me? (i know decisions are kind of up in the air for out of state, but i have been a bit anxious as of late lol)

@iamworried264 Nice. Good university and also very good first semester GPA. I’m also majoring in computer science and have applied to SEAS. I think as long as you have the required courses, the number of credits doesn’t matter. So if you have some of the pre reqs covered with AP courses then you should be good. I would just recommend to bring up the second semester grades and I’d say you have a good shot (considering you are out of state). In state I’d probably guarantee you in but you still have a good shot nonetheless.
Chance me please?

Looks pretty good. SAT? I don’t chance people (only admissions has the right to, esp. in a school like UVA that takes a holistic review) but you look like you are def. a worthy applicant.
Thanks! I really appreciate your kind words. I did not send my ACT score since it was just below UVA’s average.
figure about a month of waiting left? every night before i go to sleep i pray to dean j and say a rosary for jack the admissions dog
Following previous years, the decision is given the last Friday of April at the earliest so that would be the 27th of April for this year. So yah approximately a month remaining. It’s a long wait but hopefully it’s worth it!
@CTUR782 I’m actually in state haha. Hopefully we both get in! We should meet up if we do since we will probably have relatively similar classes due to being in the same major.
Well, that’s adorable, but I’m not dead and I don’t think they’ll be canonizing me when I do make my exit.
Please don’t forget to apply for financial aid, everyone!! The hard deadline is April 1 aka at the end of this week. Here’s what you need to submit:
- CSS profile
- FAFSA
- Your parents’ tax docs and W-2s from 2016
- Your tax docs and W-2s from 2016
They may also add things to your financial aid to do list afterward.
I have some answers to the 2nd vs 3rd year questions…
The GPA stats aren’t different between the two groups. 3.4 and better is going to be competitive. The difference is really on the course side of things, as you all know. That high school transcript is much more important for the 2nd years, who only have one semester of college courses.
EDIT: I realize that I didn’t track down offer rates for the two groups. I’ll work on that.
