@NOVAtransfer It’s a tough call for you particularly because you’re in sophomore standing, credit-wise. Your stats are good though, I couldn’t chance you myself but maybe someone else on here with experience could. Also, don’t sell yourself short! Any GPA 3.7+ is great and is never questioned or looked down upon (def focus on keeping it up there though) - the transfer avg. is 3.4-3.5 right? When UVA visited my CC their presentation said 3.4, but I’ve seen 3.5 online as well.
Also; having that foreign language requirement hammered away puts you in a very small minority of transfers - definitely a plus.
Hey I just want to know if anyone knows anyone with experience regarding mid year reports? I got a 3.9 first semester at a top 40 college for CS, but my mid year report is a 3.5 so I decided to not send it in. I’m applying as an in state resident. My HS gpa was a 3.98W. Do I have a good chance of getting in, or am I most likely going to be waitlisted because I didn’t send my mid year? My essay was specifically about UVA since I only want to go there too. Oh and I’m applying to SEAS for CS
@Overseer Well, I agree that most people seem to have higher GPA’s, but those with the lower ones are less likely to talk about it and post about it online throughout the process - since they’re against such competition. Also, the average is heavily influenced by any outliers, and so it could be lower than 3.5 but pulled up by 4.0’s, or much higher than 3.5 but pulled down by some amazing applicants with very low GPA’s.
*The UVA FAQ states the average GPA for transfers is 3.5: https://admission.virginia.edu/transfer/faq
*UVA visited my CC, and on their powerpoint slide they presented to us, the avg. gpa for transfers was 3.4
*At the open house for transfers 3.4-3.5 was said out loud during the presentation discussion
Averages are always to be taken with a grain of salt, a median here would be much more revealing and helpful for describing or summarizing what we’re trying to figure out - which is just how many <3.6’s are actually admitted! I find it promising, it displays how holistic UVA is in their transfer admissions process.
You wouldn’t get rejected just based on not sending in your mid term reports. Although your midterms grades are a bit lower compared to your first semester, as long as you bring your grades up by the end of the semester you should be fine. About your chances, I’d say you have great chance of getting admitted. If you get wait-listed, then they will probably make the decision looking at your 2nd semester grades.
I wouldn’t worry - midterm reports are optional and you’re in a major known for being much more rigorous than others. That being said, if it’s a 3.5 because of a B in a course known to be very hard - I would probably still send it - but that might very well be the wrong choice.
CS + Top 40 + 3.9 & 3.5 isn’t bad at all - just depends on the class weighing it down.
& what @CTUR782 says above is accurate. If they waitlist you - they want to see your final grades. If they deny you, they didn’t care for the midterm report enough to consider it as something that would help your app.
Lol @iamworried264 that username though. Don’t be worried man, take it easy and be confident. Just focus on your second semester grades and don’t think about the rest.
UVA advertises a 3.5 transfer GPA but I am pretty sure that this factors in the students who transfer under the GAA. Personally, I do not think a first year student who has averaged a 3.5 GPA (over the Fall Semester + Spring Semester midterm) would stand a very strong chance. I believe that first year transfers should average around a 3.85+ to be on the safe side. There are also many important factors to applications as well. While GPA is most important, so are recommendations, course load, EC’s, etc.
Haha thanks guys. I just really hope we all get in without having to deal with waitlisting mid year reports are the only thing worrying me since everyone seems to be sending theirs.

I’m curious. UVA wants me to re send my transcript since they did not receive it. If I send it now, when will they start reading it? I tried mailing it and they did not receive it. If I send an etranscript, will they have start reading it the next day since all it takes is a quick online delivery?
To Clarify I am coming from UT San Antonio applying to UVA

Hey all, next year’s first year class size doesn’t affect this year’s transfer group.
I haven’t read back, but the 3.4-3.5 GPA is right. We’ve dipped lower here and there and McIntire definitely has a much higher average. The courses you’ve taken are obviously extremely important since we need to make sure you’ve take classes that line up with the requirements for the different schools.
I’m sorry I haven’t checked in very much on this thread! I’ll try to look in and answer questions more regularly.
Great to know! Is Dean J the same person as transfermer from the transfer blog? Also, one of my friends said that the acceptance rate for OOS prospective sophomores is 10 percent because they are the least-desired demographic. Is that true?
Transfermer is a dean who has specialized in transfer admission for years. I’ll be honest…a lot of the times when transfer questions get super technical, I run down the hall and ask her for the answer!
@“Dean J” Hi Dean J. Sorry to sound pushy and all, but is it true that we will only find out our decision on May 1st. By any chance, do you know any other date or for example waves that might happen in April?
