Is anyone planning on going to the open house next Friday?
Me.
I will be there as well.
I forgot to mention msport… DeanJ of UVA stated specifically that GPA is not what gets students admitted. They look at course rigor and grades. So taking 8 weeks is beneficial for the spring semester because you can now send the transcript with the updated grades to UVA. GPA reflects grades yes, but the point of 8 weeks is so you can provide your college more course work earlier so it factors into the admission process. Just a heads up.
@Swahilli I only said not to because I believed that it doesn’t show up at all until the semester ends, I guess things must have changed or my case was individual! Assuming UVA will see it, I definitely support taking the course! I’m doing the same thing with my NW requirement :p. Cheers!
Like you said, the grades showed up on your transcript, while the GPA updated at the end of the semester. When your grades show up on your transcript, you’re now able to send that transcript to your desired college(s).
College GPA is definitely important (it’s the high schools that use inconsistent methodology), but course selection is also very important for transfers in light of the requirements laid out on the transfer pages of our website.
Please remember that my blog is for first-year students. There is a separate UVA transfer blog.
Thank you for the clarification!
Hey I’m also technically first year at NVCC looking to transfer as a sophomore. Here are some stats
1st Semester: 15 credits 4.0 GPA
2nd Semester( took off for 1): 21 credits 4.0 GPA
I might not take many or any classes next semester due to a personal reason. What are my chances? I’m 20 years old and I’ve finished 36 or so credits with a 4.0 GPA in UVA related courses on the transfer page. I took the ACT as a senior in high school a couple years ago and scored a 31. Chances?
How many of the requirements on the transfer page do you have? @uvahopeful7222 If you were to take 15 credits next semester, you’d be applying as a third year transfer, as you’d already have 51 credits. Even though you took a semester off, your first semester of college was in academic year 2016-2017, which makes academic year 2017-2018 your second year.
Even if you only took 12 credits next semester, I’d give it some thought. Applying as a third-year raises your odds and with your GPA and test scores, assuming your essays and the rest of your app look good, you’d be a very competitive applicant imo (although I’m not an admissions officer of any sort, so just an opinion).
i’m not sure that is correct. My son transferred in with 50 credits (including AP credits) and is a second year. I think 60 plus is 3rd year status. Not sure why you think it is easier to get in as a 3rd year. There is probably stats on the web site but I can’t find them.
@Collegehelp4us 3rd year transfer is “easier” simply because more students are going to be accepted as they are the priority transfers. Second year transfer is “harder” due to the fact that there are significantly less spots to come in, making competition all the more higher. Congrats on your sons transfer!
@Collegehelp4us Congrats to your son! You must be so proud. The reason I said they could apply as as third-year is because I’d asked an admissions officer if that would be a possibility for me when I didn’t know if I’d be able to attend school full-time this semester (Fall 2017). I would’ve had 52 credits (wouldn’t have earned my A.A.), and I was told I could apply as a third-year transfer by selecting this option in my common app, and I could make up the missing 8 credits during summer sessions, an extra class in a later semester, etc.
For transfer applicants in years to come (who I know will read this thread): How many AP credits did your son include in his 50?
He came in with 20 and had 50 at his other school. I guess one difference in coming in 2nd year instead of 3rd is the requirements. 6 of his so credits counted as gen Ed electives not for the specific classes so he did have to retake them
Good luck!
Hey guys! Currently a second year NVCC student looking to transfer into McIntire for junior year!
High school GPA: Not so good, but an upward trend!(For reasons to be included in the essay)
SAT: 1260 out of 1600(Math 650 Reading/Writing 610)
Stats:
College GPA: 4.0 with 52 credits after this semester(71 after next with 63 transferring to McIntire)
Fulfilled all the prerequisites
Letters of Recommendation: One from Accounting professor
One from English Professor
ECs: Working as a sports instructor for two different companies the past two years
Worked as an English Teacher prepping kids for the TOEFL in foreign country for 3 months over the summer
Working a Facility Supervisor County job
Solid amount of volunteer hours at my local church
Vice President of PTK honors society
Server at two different fast food places for a couple months each
Interned at a medium size business in a foreign country for a few months
I’d like to know what you guys think?
I think you have a good chance of getting in. Mcintire can be really unpredictable for external transfer into the school, but from my research I’ve seen 4.0s get in.
Thanks! I think without a doubt the biggest thing holding me back is my high school grades, but hopefully they don’t put as much focus on them as the college ones!
@Business2733 Your HS stats are not going to be very relevant if you’re transferring in with 63 credits. I’m pretty sure 60 is the max but maybe i’m a little off. The GPA and ec’s are great! The only thing holding you back may be your SAT score, it’s very low for McIntire.
I think you’ve got a solid shot bar the SAT score! When you say you fulfill all the requirements i’m assuming you mean that you have done the foreign language requirement?
Good luck.
How are your guys’ finals going? Final stretch here for UVA apps
@Swahilli Taking my last one today, but it’s for my favorite class so I’m actually excited! Finals went smoothly, except for a B in History of American Foreign Policy, and another B in Anatomy & Physiology. These were my harder classes so I’m still proud of myself for choosing a more challenging course to fulfill my HIS and science pre-reqs, but you know. I was aiming for straight A’s.
I’ll be ending the semester at a 3.72 overall GPA, which makes me super nervous! I don’t think it’s uncommon for 3.7 GPAs to get into CAS, and I know GPA isn’t everything, but seeing my GPA dip during the semester before apps are due was a little unnerving. I think what really harmed my GPA calculation is that I’ve only earned 25 credits from NOVA (I have an additional 9 transfer credits that will also transfer to UVA but don’t count toward GPA), so the 2 B’s I got this semester were heavier on my GPA, even though I started the semester with a 4.0.
Do you guys know if admissions takes the way a lower number of credits affects GPA into account (e.g. a 3.7 GPA with 60+ credits is different than a 3.7 GPA with 25 credits? @“Dean J” ?
