UVA Fall 2018 Transfer Thread

HS GPA becomes pretty irrelevant once you cross the 30+ credit threshold. I know the UC schools do this actually. They don’t even request HS grades at all once you pass 30 credits. For some reason I’ve read on the Mcintire blog that external transfers have the HS record looked at quite a bit actually.

What if you want to transfer in as a second year and then apply to Mcintire? Is that uncommon/discouraged?

Hey guys,

Regarding the foreign language requirement, does anyone know if you need all four semesters, no exceptions? I tested into the 202 level and passed. With that being said, the only college-level foreign language on my transcript is successfully completing the 202 level, not the previous three semesters. Thanks!

I don’t think it’s an issue as long as all your pre reqs are done. My son is starting the process now after transferring in as a second year.

Did you mean 2020? My son placed into the 4th class so only needed that 1 to fulfill the requirement

@dukesilverissaxy Your language requirement should be fulfilled. Also, check that the credits for the 202 course transfer. In either case, we have the opportunity to take a language placement test at orientation to test out of the language requirement altogether.

My guess is that you’re done with foreign language. But if not, the transfer blog and the dean at the transfer open house info session both mentioned that most transfers are missing something on the transfer course requirements, and it’s often the foreign language. I wouldn’t worry about it to much.

@msport @NOVAtransfer @Collegehelp4us Hey I’m in TCC (community college) and I would like to be chanced. Im applying after 2 completed semesters at TCC for sophomore status. Can you chance?
1st semester: 21 credits 4.0 GPA
2nd Semester: 15 credits 4.0 GPA (Im taking 8 weeks this semester so they’ll see full 36 credits)
HS GPA: 3.2 (maybe lower I did bad because of mental issues)
Old SAT: 2020/2400

@greenflamingo - Not uncommon or discouraged. Many do this, and are successful. However, there is the risk that you may gain admission to UVA but be denied from McIntire. Have an alternate major in mind just in case.

@uvact123 Rumor has it they accept slightly less second year transfers, but my (non-admissions-officer) opinion is that your college grades look awesome. I’d focus on maintaining those grades, and knocking it out of the park with your essays. I think you’d make a strong candidate. Though strong grades are a very important factor, you’ll want to make sure you’ve taken as many of the course requirements outlined here as possible: https://admission.virginia.edu/transfer/requirements

If you’re not sure if the courses you’ve taken fulfill a specific requirement, search for your courses in the transfer credit analyzer to see what they transfer as: http://ascs8.eservices.virginia.edu/asEquivs

P.S. you can “double dip” your courses. If you took, for example, a 3 credit sociology course to fulfill one of your social science requirements, and the transfer credit analyzer has the courses listed as “NW”, then boom you’ve also fulfilled your 3 credits of non-western perspective. Two birds, one stone.

See you on the other side, hopefully!

Thanks for the credit analyzer link I just checked and all my courses are transferable which is pretty relieving to me! I’ve fufilled most of the requirements actually. I only have to take english and 3-6 more credits of Math/Science at UVA if I successfully transfer. Thanks man!

@uvact123 That’s awesome! Seems like you’re on a really good track. I think as a second year transfer they expect about half of the requirements.

Hey guys I am thinking of applying. Any thoughts on my chances?

Obviously bragging.

There’s no need to post stats that are practically perfect. Honestly, it does nothing but discourage everyone else when they see someone like yourself act worried with a record like yours.

I think people come here for support. There is no guarantee of any scores. How often have you hear students getting into one Ivy over another or one average school over another. Yes royalblue has great stats but combine that with being out of state and his/her chances could diminish quote a bit. There really is no easy answer. You could have average scores coming from instate and write a stellar essay and get in. So many variables to consider. Wishing you all the best of luck.

^^^ what’s with the negativity. UVA is a world class school and ANY top student with a good track record is fair game to be rejected. @royalblue35 you look like you’re in a great place! being out of state will make it much more difficult than these two guys above think - good luck!

Not really. Out of state is competitive, but it’s not THAT competitive either for transfer to the point where they would reject someone with his stats.

There’s no way for any of us to know if someone will get in for sure. I think most people come here for a second opinion to make them feel better. People with awesome stats deserve moral support, too.

UVA takes the essays seriously. Someone could have stellar stats but be lacking in their essays. It also depends on the applicant pool in general. If most applicants have awesome stats, it’s more likely some applicants will get rejected when if their apps are awesome as well. The school you apply to also matters. In last year’s thread, there were near-perfect GPAs with phenomenal EC’s rejected for McIntire, while you have CAS applicants getting in with a 3.6ish. Who knows.

Agreed. SEAS is also very tough. CAS have the most leniency in terms of GPA no doubt…

Anyone have any idea on how to send my college transcripts? My college provides online copies of transcripts and sends them to us. Can I just email the school my transcript?
