Hi,
I know these kind of threads have been sent many times and discussed a lot and I am one of those who didn't even open these threads, but right now I am in a real dilemma and dont know what to do!?
UVA and NYU-GSP both have accepted me and I enrolled at both since I want to decide at the end of August after the financial aid packages have arrived.
NYU offered me 15K and 30K in loans. I will be a GSP student for the first two years then study Econ&Political Science. I want to continue at NYU Law school after graduation. at NYU I will have the opportunity to study abroad in Italy or Madrid. Also the internship and job opportunities at NYU are better than those at UVA (NYC factor!)
UVA is a better school in rankings and especially in Econ major(#23). I will not have to do a 2 year GSP program but concentrate on my major from my freshman year on. I did not receive any Financial Aid package from UVA yet. I will be far away from my father (NYC) and mother (Istanbul,Turkey), but there are a lot of friends I have who go there.
I am a very outgoing, self confident, social person so I dont think making friends will be a problem for me in both universities (NYU-no campus-less friendship??) and I am familiar with both universities, i visited both. NYU not having a campus does not bother me, I lived in NYC and love the city.
Although I believe that NYU is a better place for me and I can picture myself at WashingtonSquare rather than Charlottesville, if I choose NYU I will have to end up with 120K debt after my 4 yrs and probably another 100K for the law school. So at the age of 26 I will be a Law Graduate with quarter of a million debt!
But then i read that most of the students at American colleges start their lives with big amounts of debts.
I am a very indecisive person in situations like this, so I would really appreciate your thoughts on this subject.Thank you in advance to those who reply!

Most people may graduate with debt but I don't think its typically $250,000 worth.

GSP sounds sketch. You will be limited to the amount of courses you get to take for the first two-years and yet you still pay as much amount as a non-GSP NYU student does. Are you in-state or OOS?

for Virginia - Out of State, but my family wont have problems paying 23K for the first year and then 6K for the next three years.
It's 46K per year which makes me take out loans! :(
GSP pro: the first two years I will have finished all the required courses and can concentrate on my major in my junior&senior year and I will have a less stressful schedule for my frist two years. con: the GSP-reputation at NYU - only required classes-no individuality for the first two years!

How much loans will you have after you graduate from NYU? And, UVA?

uva - probably none maybe $10K cause the high school I attend right now costs double what UVA does.
NYU- I would have to take out $15K yearly but instead my family plans to take out the full amount $31K instead of using from the savings.

Like I said in the other thread, UVA is probably a better school and it will save you money.

I read your post earlier but didn't have time to respond, and I can't remember if you said you visited Charlottesville. If you haven't, you should :) Anyway I read something in another thread about not going to UVA if you're liberal...and while I see the point I also wanted to add that just because the student body of a school has a liberal majority, that does not make it especially condusive to the liberal ideology. I draw from all over the political spectrum, but I'm pretty liberal myself and I think that UVA has an awesome atmosphere that would make you think and become stronger in whatever sort of ideology you might have. I mean, how can you be sure and settled about something when you haven't been provided with alternatives. I don't think I'm wording this exactly correctly but I don't want you to make an ideology- based decision, unless, of course, thats what you're going for.
Anyway, UVA is awesome and good for what you want to study, but it all boils down to where you will be happiest. I think you have the financial and ranking/standard/level of education thing covered so just think really hard of how your life would be for the next few years in both of these places and I think you will find which one you're "meant" to be at. :) Good Luck!

UVA and NYU are pretty different. For example, UVA is more campus based, a lot Greeker, and has a TON of school spirit and major ACC sports competition. NYU is more independent, and lacks any major sports teams or real things to do "on campus"--it's more of a make-your-own-fun sort of place. I think going to school at NYU will be a lot more like simply growing up and moving out and being your own, while being at UVA is a very traditional and fun college experience. I personally believe that you just can't beat UVA and of course I feel that you should come here. Especially considering the money factor, if you aren't IN LOVE with NYU, it's probably the smarter choice to attend UVA.

thank you for both posts.
illnevergetin&semiserious : I visited Charlottesvilee and have 7 friends who go there and know the campus life. It was my third choice after Brown and NYU. I know I will like it there (also because of the friends) and I also think I could get better job opportunities as an UVA grad(?). But then I am in Love with NYU and I dont really care if a school has campus and Greek life or not although having those would make my next four years a real college experience.
I would like to attend both schools but if there wasnt the loan problem I'd definitely pick NYU. The question is: Is NYU worth 100-150K? As I said my parent can pay 15-20K per year, so I wouldn't apply for aid at UVA, but NYU will cost me 31K per year and instead of paying the 15K they would for UVA they plan to take out the whole amount of 31K as loans which adds up to >100K at the end of my four years. I want to know if starting my life with that much debt is worth being at NYU for four years???

No, NYU is completely overrated. At the undergraduate level, it is not worth going into that kind of debt. UVA is a better school and it will save you money. For graduate school (law school, I think you said), going to school in New York City would still be an excellent option. NYU and Columbia both have excellent law schools that have excellent placement among top law firms.

ascremer, do you know what you want to major in?

econ&pol. science

Well I would imagine that NYU has a great political science program. I know UVA's political science program is one of the top, and I think the econ major has the highest number of graduates. When it boils down to this, what's important is seeing where you'll learn and benefit more from, and what type of people you prefer and like to make friends with at each of these two schools.

i was 100% sure about NYU but i think ill go for UVA...?

You said you were in love with NYU.
Then no more discussion, no more thinking.
Go where your love is. That is all there is to it.

Go to NYU.

You guys just put my dream into words!!!
thankssss those were the posts I was waiting for to justify my ridicilous debt:)

I wouldn't make a decision like this on emotional factors. You're choosing between a general studies program at a relatively overpriced private school and a legitimate top 25 university at less cost.

Thank you for your post
the GSP program is a 2 year program and I will be graduating as any other College of Arts&Science Econ-Political Science major. If I have the required GPA I can even transfer to Stern! So there wont be any difference in my CV.
Other than that I want to be in a place where I can be happy and even the thought of studying in Charlottesville for 4 years does not excite me at all! On the other hadn thinking that I will be in NYC and a NYU student makes me happy! And I want to be happy and not say: I wish I had gone to.... So this time I will go with my emotional choice...
