Honest opinion please if you gain acceptance to UVA and John Hopkins for a pre med student where would you go??

I would pick UVA. Both schools are great academically, but UVA has a better social scene and real D-1 sports. Hopkins seems more cutthroat and less spirited.

For real academics go to Hopkins, if you don't just want to be a college student but want to excel, make a difference, do research and work in the lab with some of the greatest people in the field: come to Hopkins. If not, or you're just simply interested in med school this advice is not valid.

(Disclaimer: this is not to contrast UVA, I'm sure it's an amazing schol with an amazing staff.)

better overall experience---> uva

four years of hell, but better for medicine--->jhu

I think that they're both great intitutions, and it should come down to where you feel most at home. They have very different "vibes". I wouldn't say one is "better" for pre-med, even though JHU is incredibly overhyped for it. You will get a good education at both.

I love the campus environment at UVa; it is gorgeous and the people are so friendly and open (and hot, lol). But, I love Baltimore (despite complaints JHU is in "the ghetto" and there is nothing to do there...ok...it's like 2 minutes from the courthouse...good try) and maybe would fit in better with the more "bookish" people at JHU. shrug

Have you looked into which school had a stronger rep/curriculum for your major? That could factor into the decision as well. Personally, I'd choose JHU just because I like a city campus better. Both are too conservative for me, but at least at JHU I'd be able to escape campus and go someplace else besides Small Town USA. Haha.

Look in the premed forum.

I'd go with UVA. Only because I hear the guys are hawt!!!111!!!!1

(btw, I'm completely kidding. This is an allusion to the "where can I find the best education and the hottest guys thread.")

the pre-med requirements are as follows:

2 semesters frosh chem + labs
2 semesters orgo + labs
2 semesters bio + labs
2 semesters physics + labs
2 semesters english
2 semester calculus

i.e. most of these courses are low level/intro courses and practically any decent school will be able to teach you these things adequately - so don't get to worried about which school has a better med school because that has nothing to do with pre-med.

Go to JHU if you don't mind being anti-social. One of the reasons a friend of mine transferred to UVA from JHU was because he couldn't stand how anti-social people were over there.

If your top 2 reasons for going to college is to socialize then yes JHU is a bad place to be.

Go to UVA. Trust me. My friend goes to JHU and hates it. And, both are such excellent schools, that if you do well there will be no significant difference in opportunities after college.

UVA if in-state
Hopkins if OOS

Personally, I would've chosen Hopkins over UNC.

What makes UVA such a great school?

UVa becuase its a very well respected school so you won't be losing much in terms of academics. And you will have an enormously better 4 years there.
