I recently got accepted into Tulane and also the University of Virginia. I am originally from Virginia but now I live in Arkansas and UVA has been my dream school for years. As far as price goes, UVA is about 20k cheaper but money isn’t really an issue. However, I am worried that if I go to UVA I will be missing out on the experience of going to college in New Orleans. Also, the student body at Tulane is much more geographically diverse and most of the people who will go to UVA are from where I used to live. Tulane also has much smaller class sizes especially I am in the honors program there. I don’t know what I want to major in but do y’all have any advice on which I should choose?
IMHO, I will vote for UVA and it is your dream school and it is cheaper. You are going to the college to learn, you can get a job after graduation and live all your life in New Orleans.
On the other hand, if you plan to spend your life in VA, you may want to get out of the neighborhood and experience something really unique and different in New Orleans, at the same time meeting friends (maybe contacts) from around the country.
In any event, here is the advice I give to people torn between two seemingly equal choices: flip a coin. That’s right. Flip a coin. Better yet, do it with a friend who will hold you accountable for the result. You’ll find out real fast what your preference is once the decision is taken out of your hands. Best of luck to you!
@nats1fan, not sure if you saw this on Tulane Admissions Director Jeff Schiffman’s blog: http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2012/11/nola-lingo.html. It will give you a flavor of the unique culture of N’Awlins!
Two great schools. My S is considering both as well. Can’t go wrong. I second @NJDad68 on the coin-flipping.
Lets assume the money is not an issue, bc if it is then go to UVA. Tulane is a great school, but UVA carries a better name, even in New Orleans. Just on that I would go to UVA. But they are both great choices so this is a great example of listening to your heart.
I suggest UVA! It is a great school, especially as your dream school, with many opportunities to study abroad and visit other areas of the world. There are an array of great majors to choose from. I would not suggest choosing a college solely based on location, as it is the education you are getting that matters most in the end. When you graduate from an university, you will have opportunities to travel and maybe even find some job opportunists in other states to. Best of luck and congratulations!
UPDATE: I visited both colleges and I have decided to attend UVA! Thanks for all of yall’s advice!
