I am a senior in high school and have been accepted to UVA and UNC Chapel Hill and I can't decide where I want to go. They are relatively similar in price for me.

I am interested in majoring in Environmental Science or some type of Ecological Biology, any ideas which school has the better program?

I am also hoping for lots of outdoor recreation opportunities (hiking, camping, etc.) wherever I go. Any info on this for either school would be really helpful.

Which school do you think is better overall??

UNC-CH doesn’t have as much prestige as UVa. Nevertheless, attend the cheaper one. Both are elite public institutions. What is your home state ? I think University of Virginia is overall better.

I’m pretty educated about UNC Chapel Hill. Sciences at unc are very strong. Also, it’s a good school if you want outdoor activities. North Carolina has lots of mountains in the western part and the beach on the east. It’s a state with the best of both worlds. The women’s soccer team goes hiking and camps out in the mountains every year for team bonding. The students at unc are very service oriented for the most part. If you’re looking for other students who care a lot about the environment like you, you’ll be in good company. UNC is world known and has top professors from all over the world and Chapel Hill is the ultimate place for students and there’s no state like North Carolina. To me, the decision would easily be unc

Are you instate for either one?

My home state is NC (which I agree is an incredibly beautiful state, although there’s a part of me that wants to go farther away…and UVA is irresistibly close to the mountains). The financial aid calculators actually have UVA being slightly cheaper for me (I have an unusual and kind of ideal financial situation).

I have toured the Environmental Science program at UNC-CH and was impressed with what I saw. UVA’s program looks great too though. Any ideas which is more prestigious?

Choose the school based on the fit, not the prestigious level. Where do you feel most comfortable?

Also, check the course listings to see what appeals to you.

OP, based in what you just said I’d say that UVA edges out UNC for you. The tie breaker is that UVA is cheaper, close to the mountains, and also has a good environmental program. Both schools are prestigious but I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Prestige doesn’t always tell the whole story. Just because a school has prestige doesn’t mean it’s as good as everyone says.

Spread your wings. Go with University of Virginia.
