I was accepted into both University of Virginia (UVA) and Virginia Tech University Honors.

I'm planning on majoring in psychology with a minor in biology, going on with the pre-med track. I know UVA has the better pre-med program and everything there is strong academically. However, after going to Days on the Lawn, I really saw myself more at Virginia Tech, after going to Hokie Focus and wandering campus for two days.

I'd be happier at VT. However, will getting a degree that's not in engineering at VT hinder my chances from getting a job after four years, or will it prevent me from going to medical school if I decide to go that route?

Comparing UVA and VT, which has a better job recruitment after college?

What benefits will I have in the VT Honors program?

I don't want to go to UVA because it's so competitive and I don't think that environment is right for me. VT environment seems more welcoming to me. I'm just worried that getting a degree that's not engineering from VT will hinder me from getting a good job.

Is it difficult to get internship/volunteer/shadowing opportunities?

I dont know about the occupations after college for these schools but if you plan on doing medical school Im guessing that your actual medical school will be more important to your future employers. I suggest you go with tech cause you seem to like it a lot more and the only thing that’s holding you back is that UVA is considered a “better school” for pre med. Talk to alumni from Tech and UVA in your field and see if they were able to get to the place you may want to go in your career.

I also went to the Hokie Focus on sunday, also accepted in the honors college. After extensive research, I believe UVA would look much better on transcripts, VT just doesn’t have the strength in name and academic rigor. If you want to have a good time, go to VT, as UVA is a serious school, but in terms of after-graduation jobs, UVA is the way to go. The honors college at VT offers “harder” classes, more advisers, and their own living quarters, but the difference between VT and VT honors would be difficult to differentiate on a resume for someone who isn’t a Virginia native.

Actually, Virginia Tech is well liked by recruiters and the list of top emloyers from the two schools is very similar. If you feel that Virginia Tech is the better fit for you, I would not get hung up on worries about future employment. Both will get you where you need to go and you might as well have fun along the way. Good luck with your decision.

Vtech is well recruited and if you can handle the STEM core AND do another major, more power to you! Certainly employers will be able to recognize this. Based on what you said, it sounds like VTech is the best choice for you. Congratulations! :)
