UVA or VT Honors?

I was accepted into both University of Virginia (UVA) and Virginia Tech University Honors.

I'm planning on majoring in psychology with a minor in biology, going on with the pre-med track. I know UVA has the better pre-med program and everything there is strong academically. However, after going to Days on the Lawn, I really saw myself more at Virginia Tech, after going to Hokie Focus and wandering campus for two days.

I'd be happier at VT. However, will getting a degree that's not in engineering at VT hinder my chances from getting a job after four years, or will it prevent me from going to medical school if I decide to go that route?

Comparing UVA and VT, which has a better job recruitment after college?

What benefits will I have in the VT Honors program?

I don't want to go to UVA because it's so competitive and I don't think that environment is right for me. VT environment seems more welcoming to me. I'm just worried that getting a degree that's not engineering from VT will hinder me from getting a good job.

Is it difficult to get internship/volunteer/shadowing opportunities?

You don’t need to major in engineering to have excellent employment opportunities with a degree from VT. My company (big bank) hires many VT (and UVa) grads. I’ve read too many stories on this forum about students who selected UVa because of perceived post graduation opportunities, but are miserable for four years. If VT feels more welcoming and comfortable to you, I would lean that direction. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge UVa fan (legacy with two kids as grads), but it’s not the best place for everyone.

@robertr‌ Thank you! I just felt like I’d regret going to VT because I’d be passing up such an amazing opportunity, but you’re right. I’m leaning more towards VT. :)

Go where your heart tells you to be, and everything will work out as it should. Have no regrets! Both are excellent schools. I am also deciding between the two for engineering, and time is running out.

You answered you own question very well…go to Tech. You will not regret it.

I could put the best professor in the world in front of you, but if you aren’t engaged, you won’t get as much out of the experience. This is why admission officers cringe when people try to convince themselves to go to a school based on rankings. Go to the best school for you! :)

FWIW to others who may read this, competitive doesn’t mean cut throat. Our students strive for excellence, but aren’t looking to achieve it at others’ expense.

Come to Charlottesville. It’s the only heaven that is exist on the entire planet.

Wow, this is the exact same question my D faced just four short years ago! Now as she is getting ready to graduate the week after next I can honestly say UVA was the best choice for her. I went to a more traditional school and would have picked VT. She has grown both personally and professionally while at UVA and has landed a job at a company and location she wanted. She has made lifelong friends at the school, most in majors other than hers. She wanted to take classes outside of engineering (loves art) and UVA seemed to have the best option. The advice so far is spot on, go to both; they are very different places and pick the one you love. There is no “better place to go”. The best place is the one you will be happy to attend! Good luck, you have a nice choice to make!
