UVa Registration and Housing Info?

Does anyone know when we get the housing info and other registration papers? Do they wait until after RD to send them out all at once or should we be expecting them soon?

I think that all happens after RD

It happens after enrollment, actually, starting in the summer

after the RD acceptance deposit deadline passes is when they start sending that stuff...expect it no earlier than end of april/early may, and even that would be early

I got a postcard in the mail yesterday...

It listed all the dates for summer orientation. Registration for orientation begins March 30. Move in day is August 25. That's about it.

I didn't get anything yet. :(

i'd probably get that postcard tomorrow then

In regard to housing, can someone tell me what's the deal with single rooms and generally how it works? Thanks.

Hey no one can explain to me whats the deal with singles? Is it more expensive? Can I request one? Will people think I am weirdo? Just the general stuff..come on, please!

Yes it costs more

<a href="http://www.virginia.edu/housing/options.php?id=mccormick&type=fy%5B/url%5D">http://www.virginia.edu/housing/options.php?id=mccormick&type=fy</a></p>

The partyline at UVA is that for lots of good reasons (theirs not yours) first year students have to have doubles with roommates. Since my son wanted a single and many years ago I had the very roommates from Hell when I went to college, we looked around and the one exception we found last year was Malone which had lots of single rooms so you won't be weird (for that reason anyway) Few students pick it as their first choice

Be aware that Malone is at the very top of a hill far far away from all your classes and the UVA bus service is less than reliable. However you will then walk off the freshman 15. Plus you get the worse of a bad lot in terms of dining halls - Runk Also the administration has apparently seen the light and won't double bill you as though you were part of Hereford Residential college anymore. Plus each Malone room is air conditioned and also comes with carpet as well as microwave/refrigerator all at no extra charge (unlike many of the other dorms) GOOD LUCK

One last note, Malone was sooo bad, my son now has joined up with friends made at Malone to move to another dorm next year and have 5 roommates. (yeah that's right 5 - but in a 6 person suite)

I think I am going to take the risk of having a roommate. I could roommate with my so called best friend but since we've had problems in the past, I feel like if we live together the friendship will come to a dead end and we will end up hating each other. If we have issues now, I am afraid what it will be like living in the same room. Let's just hope I don't end up like one of those people who share horror roommate stories for years and years. Thanks Charm 2017 for the info. and advice.

I heard that students aren't going to be allowed to pick where they live next year. It's some new thing the University is doing to prevent the non-diversity in Old Dorms.

Not able to pick at all?

sounds like a possibility

<a href="http://cavalierdaily.com/CVArticle.asp?ID=29058&pid=1537%5B/url%5D">http://cavalierdaily.com/CVArticle.asp?ID=29058&pid=1537</a></p>

really...im all for increased diversity and everything, but then again there must be other ways to fix that than to make things completely random. My first choice right now is McCormick, but i wouldn't really care if I got placed in Alderman either, so if its random just between those two it wouldnt be so bad. However if during the random process I got placed into one of the other dorms i really wouldn't be too happy, and I imagine a lot of others would feel the same way.

It seems that for various reasons, most non-white incoming first year students choose to live at Alderman rather than McCormick...so I heard that this school year UVA will start asking if you want Suite Style/Hall Style instead of Old Dorms/New Dorms.

Personally, I wouldn't be too happy if I was placed in a dorm randomly. Despite the preppy stereotype of Old Dorms, I would much prefer to live there than in New Dorms since Alderman looks kinda ugly from the outside (I know, it's shallow)...and McCormick's closer to classes, and you'll meet more people since it's hall style.

Agreed, I really want hall style, but I heard they were taking ANY choice of preference out of the system, is that wrong?

Not considering the makeup or arrangement of the dorm itself, the "new dorm" rooms are better. Larger rooms (the website says they are the same but it just isn't true), beds that can be bunked (hancock/bonnycastle have that ability in old dorms too), and individual closets.

as of now there's been talk of the change but no definitive answer on the subject. don't worry too much about it because you'll probably end up loving wherever you end up anyways (unless you get stuck in hereford).

what are the odds of getting into Brown as a freshman coming in - my D was told to apply and best place to be altho more $$
