UVa Registration and Housing Info?

mckin43 - odds are better to get into Brown as an incoming first year because many people don't want to go through another application process. Just remember that Brown tends to attract more of the unique individuals at the university.

I would strongly oppose applying for brown as an incoming first year though. Yes it's closer to grounds and allows for you to essentially have your own room, but there are many things that she will miss out on. While she will be housed with another first year, the environment will not be the same at brown vs new/old dorms. In traditional first year dorms she will be be surrounded by so many others who are new to the college experience and that first year experience won't exist at Brown. I would recommend that she do regular first year dorms and then after a semester if she feels that she would enjoy living in Brown then go ahead and apply for the following year.

Apply to live in Brown! Not only do you get your own room, but also a roommate next door. The room is bigger than in other dorms. Added to this, Brown is the IDEAL location on campus, since it's located smack-down in the middle. You are only minutes away from most of your classes.

thnx for your insights...does it change your thoughts on dorms i she is an athlete? (crew team)

we have a first year crew member (male) in brown this year
there is a discussion of this on another thread, you should read that. in summary: some ppl love it as an alternative to regular 1st yr housing (me! and my friends), some don't.

Last year, we had a couple of crew students - one of whom is my friend - who were also first-years.

My D will be a first year and is on the crew team. Is Brown where the crew coaches like to place their first years?

JohnRoss - I have not spoken to coaches about a dorm yet...I did ask if they need to get to school earlier than the 8/25 date and was told no....but I have not asked them the housing question - a friend of my daughters said many athletes are in new housing (suite style) VS old dorms...that all I know. Have you heard anything from coach Sauer or Pritzker re: housing?

I have subsequently been told that Brown is quite diff from old and new dorms as a freshman experience...not better or worse just quite different.....my D is now starting to think maybe Brown is not the place for her. She is leaning towards new dorms.

Brown is such a unique experience, especially if you live there as a first-year; you get to interact with students from other years. It's generally known as the liberal place to live out of all dorms.

Like I said, I know three crew members who have lived here in their first-year. They absolutely loved it because of its location in the middle of the campus. In the midst of their busy schedules, it was easier for them - than living in new dorms for example - to go to classes and train, etc. You also get your own room and your roommate. The rooms are bigger than in new and old dorms, which is another plus!

The catch is that you have to apply to live there. However, it's easier to get into Brown when you apply as a first-year, so seize your chance now! If you want to contact any of the crew members that live here, let me know through private messaging.

D has not heard from Coach Pritzker in a few weeks.

Tenniscraze - that woould be great if D could get contact info! I would have sent this as private message to you but couldnt figure out how !! new at this.....
