UVA Supplemental Essay

So this is UVA's supplemental essay:

We are looking for passionate students to join our diverse community of scholars, researchers, and artists. Answer this question, which corresponds to the school/program you selected in a half page or roughly 250 words.

What work of art, music, science, mathematics, or literature has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way?

So if you are applying under the college of arts and sciences and you want to major in chemistry, do you need to write the supplemental essay about science? Can you write the essay about music or literature?

For students applying to CLAS you don’t need to tailor your essay to projected major. Write about whatever suits you best, while answering the given question. Think of your essay as your interview. What would you say, project, share about yourself to the admissions committee? The topic doesn’t have to be profound, just true to you and help to show who you are and what makes you tick.
