UVA vs. Emory Undergrad Business?

Hi there! I am a white, Jewish girl from the New York metropolitan area. I am trying to decide between Emory and UVA for college next year. I plan on going into business, and both schools have great undergraduate business programs. Money is not a concern for me, so I don't care about the price. I just want to go to a school where I will be happy and have fun! Anyone have any helpful advice?? Thank you so much!

I have no personal experience with this, but some people say schools in Georgia tend to be very “southern.” That’s not necessarily a good thing or a bad thing, just may be different from what you are used to. Even things like how people dress may be different, school “customs” or whatever may be different. You should check them out, including an overnight if you can. My son did an overnight at Georgia Tech, and he really liked it. Wound up at a school in NY, but would have been fine at GT. You also may want to check out a thread about schools for b average Jewish student on the parents forum. Some of those posters are very knowledgable about various schools and their Jewish populations. My personal opinion is you can’t go wrong with either.

My son went to Emory and loved it.

Emory is not “southern” in the way that southern state schools are–it has a national student body and is very cosmopolitan. Atlanta is a great city, lots to do. The campus is gorgeous.

UVA is also beautiful.

I have heard that it is sometimes socially more difficult for out of state students at state schools (because many in state students already have groups of friends), but that is perhaps more anecdotal.

Boysx3, I think that’s more the case at regional state schools which attract the overwhelming majority of students from a 40 mile or less radius. UVA gets around 1/3 of its students from OOS, and many from across the state of Virginia. Additionally, the school is selective enough to the point where most high schools do not send bucketloads of students to the college each year. At most of the state’s high schools, perhaps a few students will matriculate, and then the rest will go to less selective VA publics such as VCU, VTech, or often a community college.

Emory is not a Southern school save for the fact that it’s in a southern state. In fact a common joke is that Emory is a Northeastern school that was accidentally built in an Atlanta suburb. A kid from the tri-state area should not have to worry about fitting in, unless they cannot function without a particular burger chain that might not be found in the Southeast.

My question to the OP is how can you be deciding between UVA and Emory? Unless Emory’s admissions have changed, it only offers two rounds of ED and one round of RD. RD admissions come out in late March, while ED decisions are binding, meaning you must go to the school.
