Ive narrowed down my college selection to the University of Virginia(which will be in state tuition) and the University of CAlifornia- San Diego(which will be out of state tuition). If i go to UVA my parents have my costs down until I graduate, going to UCSD they will have have the payments down but I will need to cover the rest. I have already applied for scholarships and am willing to do student loans but I want to know if it is worth the debt to go to UCSD over UVA. My intended major is psychology and my gpa is a 4.26. San Diego seems to be the best in psychology, but UVA seems to be best in academics. I want to end up working in a job in California and I don't know if that would be a good reason to go to a school there. Just want some feed back on what people think is the better school; UVA or UCSD?

No, it’s not worth going into debt.
Save some money and go to UVA.
Use that savings to move and look for a job in California when you graduate.

UVA is a better overall school, and you definitely shouldn’t shell out out of state prices for UCSD. It would help you in the California job market, but not enough to warrant that much debt.

My S was recently accepted at UVa too (instate). My sister attended UCSD for one year before transfering to Kenyon. My vote would be for UVa --still a strong psych dept. and you will be so much better off without having debt once you graduate. You can still go to CA after you graduate (that’s actually exactly what I did after undergrad in 1992…loooong time ago ;). If you go to Uva, you will be able to work and be able to keep the money you are making to pay for high rents and cost of living in CA.

Based on the information you provided I think UVA definitely. I don’t think it would be worth the financial costs to go to UCSD. If you are going into psych you will certainly need to go on to grad school. That might be a better time to look for academic and professional opportunities on the west coast if that’s where you ultimately want to be.

Go to UVa. It’s a more reputable school and you won’t get into debt.

what UCB said. The only major at UCSD worth paying OOS tuition for, in comparison to UVA, is Biomedical Engineering.

Keep costs down and go to the University of Virginia.

I’d argue about which school is more reputable, though. UCSD is considered a top-notch school as is the University of Virginia. I’d be equally impressed with students coming out of either institution.

Virginia is the place to go. Im going to UCSD and wish i was from Virginia or NC so icould go to William and Mary, Virginia or Chapel Hill
