I’m a senior in HS, and I want to major in engineering, specifically chemical or mechanical. I was accepted into and deciding between university of Virginia and university of Wisconsin Madison. They seem like equals, and I am having a hard time deciding.
I think Wisconsin is much better in engineering; but engineers seem to do fine no matter where they go. So if there is something you REALLY like about UVA, or if it’s cheaper, then it might be a reasonable choice. Otherwise WIS.
Everyone comes up with their own tiebreakers based on what is important to them. Is cost an issue, and is there a big difference in affordability between the two? Would you prefer the climate and amount of snow at one place over the other? Are there electives (like a specific language, e.g.) available at one university and not the other? Is there an extracurricular activity that is more available at one place than another (rock climbing, boating, other…)? I could go on and on. My point is that these universities might seem like equals from an engineering perspective, but you will be living there for four years. There will be more to your life than just your engineering courses. Research more what your life could be like at each place, including housing and activities on and off campus, and see if that helps you reach a decision.
Thank you!
