University of Virginia vs University of Wisconsin Engineering

Hello! I was accepted to engineering schools at both the University of Wisconsin and the University of Virginia. I know that Wisconsin ranks higher on most lists of top engineering schools, but what does that really mean? Also, looking to graduate as a well rounded electrical engineer (possibly with a minor in business or economics). Another important factor in making my decision is career services. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Both are excellent public research universities. UVA is more selective, while UW has a much bigger research budget and more research-related prestige. UW has a larger student population. Both have top-notch faculty.

I think you should look into the requirements for entering the Engineering program(s) – see which is more difficult. Also find out where it is easier to change majors, in case you change your mind. It happens a lot.

As for the quality of the programs, both are going to be excellent. And if you do change your mind, both schools have myriad outstanding programs from which to choose.

So look at the usual fit variables:

  • Cost
  • Social vibe
  • Environment/Surroundings/Weather
  • Dorms/Food
  • Academic fit (some things discussed above apply to academic fit)

I don’t know anything about Charlottesville, but Madison is a great city and the UW campus is pretty cool.

Wisconsin has a twist on the entry to a major issue. It admits most to the major, but has progression requirements to stay in the major.

Fortunately, EE only needs a 2.8 in major and 2.5 overall for now, but some others need as high as 3.5 in major.
