Intended major: art
University of Virginia (studio arts with a painting concentration)
UVA pros:
- Campus is beautiful
- Well rounded education
- Best choice if I decide to not do art
- Highly ranked (overall, not the art program)
- Art program is smaller and flexible, can easily double major
UVA cons:
- Tiny art program- for visual arts, you can only major in studio arts with a few concentrations
- A bit preppy, not super diverse
Virginia Commonwealth University (communication arts, but might switch to art education)
VCUart pros:
- It’s an amazing art college with a public university, so it’s cheaper than regular art schools and has a MUCH larger selection of majors compared to UVA
- In a city with a rich and diverse art community
- Will have a more rigorous art curriculum
- More art-world connections
VCUart cons:
- The university itself isn’t as well-rounded- I’d only be there for the art (maybe life sciences)
- Don’t love the campus- wish there’s more of a distinction between the city and campus
More things to consider:
- I love art, but I also love learning other things (philosophy, writing, history, maybe biology)
- Finance isn’t a problem with these two, I’m in-state and have merit scholarships for VCU
Thanks in advance for any advice!
