UVA vs. VCUarts

Intended major: art

University of Virginia (studio arts with a painting concentration)

UVA pros:

  1. Campus is beautiful
  2. Well rounded education
  3. Best choice if I decide to not do art
  4. Highly ranked (overall, not the art program)
  5. Art program is smaller and flexible, can easily double major

UVA cons:

  1. Tiny art program- for visual arts, you can only major in studio arts with a few concentrations
  2. A bit preppy, not super diverse

Virginia Commonwealth University (communication arts, but might switch to art education)

VCUart pros:

  1. It’s an amazing art college with a public university, so it’s cheaper than regular art schools and has a MUCH larger selection of majors compared to UVA
  2. In a city with a rich and diverse art community
  3. Will have a more rigorous art curriculum
  4. More art-world connections

VCUart cons:

  1. The university itself isn’t as well-rounded- I’d only be there for the art (maybe life sciences)
  2. Don’t love the campus- wish there’s more of a distinction between the city and campus

More things to consider:

  • I love art, but I also love learning other things (philosophy, writing, history, maybe biology)
  • Finance isn’t a problem with these two, I’m in-state and have merit scholarships for VCU

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you love other things, I’d recommend UVa.
