What about UVA-Wise?

I've been thinking about which colleges to apply to and am stuggling a little bit with figuring out all what I have to do because I'll be the first to actually go to college in my family. I want to do art and sort of anthropology/classical studies/religious studies type of a thing and I think Christopher Newport University, University of Mary Washington, George Mason University, and University of Virgina at Wise may be good...but what's the difference between UVA and UVA at Wise other than location?

UVA-Wise may not have the best curriculum for your interests. Take a look at the departments and course listings to see how they align.

UVA-Wise is completely separate from UVA except sharing a name… They have different general ed requirements, student populations, etc.

Wise is an excellent option if you want a smaller, less selective school in a quieter area. The comments about curriculum are spot on. We have the same president and board and Wise is run out of the UVa budget, but I have never heard of any departmental interaction.

We are placed side-by-side at college fairs that arrange schools in alpha order (not too common since most schools spread the “popular” schools strategically at fairs), which I have to admit I enjoy because it gives me an opportunity to learn more about what they are up to.

Virginia Commonwealth University is very strong in studio art.

Agree with jingle: if you have any real interest in the fine arts, VCU is the first school in Virginia that you should look at. I actually know of more than one student who transferred from U-Va to VCU for this very reason, blasphemous as it may sound.

My roommate did art at UVA, she loved it. It is very time intensive when projects are due. She double majored in English.

I looked around at vcu and didn’t really like the Richmond city scene it had, so do you know any other art schools that might have more space? I sort of wanted to be able to do cultural and religious studies as well, not just art, so any ideas I guess?

Have you tried using the college search tool on this site?

I just tried it out and it gave me Norfolk State University, then Raford, George Mason, and Virginia State. Any of those stick out maybe?

James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA has majors in Art, Art History, Anthropology, and Philosophy & Religion.
