I've been wait listed in UVA and they say that the decision will be posted on the 15th of May. So can we accept others in the mean time and then wait and see what UVA says because the deadline is 1st May for all others, then accept UVA if they accept you? Can we actually do that, cause if not then I don't see the point in waiting for UVA's reply. It may be too risky, ending up nowhere. Any opinions?

Yes you can accept somewhere else and if you get off the waitlist then switch. There’s nothing wrong with that, I know plenty of people who did that. That’s how schools get a waitlist working anyways, people who committed say “oh never mind” and then they fill that spot with someone else.

You actually have to, if you are waitlisted anywhere you have to put down a deposit for another school and then withdraw later if you get into said school. It’s a bit of a waste of money, but if you really want to go to the school it’s worth it.

I’m sorry, but this is totally incorrect. There is no mass release of decisions on May 15th.

The waitlist notification process takes a bit of time. Read the FAQ you got with your decision and check out the blog. I think the time line is explained pretty well on both. :)

Every school accounts for some people canceling after making a deposit (meaning, they got an offer off the waitlist elsewhere). In our industry, it’s called summer melt.
