UVM EA Class of 2023

S was accepted. 3.8 GPA, 1210 SAT. NO scholarship money. So my question is what kind of aid can we expect? We are out of state. He has offers from other schools, but UVM is his clear top choice. We have saved, but full sticker price is out of the question.

Congrats on your acceptance. Aid would most likely be in the form of $5500 student loan and up to $10,700 Parent Plus loan.

Accepted EA to Biomedical Engineering with Presidential Scholarship of $17,000 a year. I have a 1360 SAT and a 3.7 unweighted GPA. I’ve taken advanced science electives, completed both Calc AB and BC, Co-Lead Model UN and Robotics, and took an internship at a lab.

@Waynecollegedad You might want to run the Net Price Calculator entering scores lower than the scholarship cutoffs to see what grants UVM may give based on your financials alone. The calculator for us suggests grants on top of the scholarships my D will receive. UVM is unlike other state flagships in that the OOS cost is in private school range and they do provide grant aid.

Accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences with a major in history and 7k per semester with the Trustees Scholarship! I had a 3.6 unweighted GPA, 1210 Superscored SAT, got a 5 on my AP US History test and a 4 on my AP Language and Composition test, and im taking 3 AP’s this year. I also intern at a local museum and do a lot of extracirrculars, including 2 sports and a lot of clubs. Congrats to all those who got accepted!

Does need-based aid come out in February?

@JeanneAP The portal states that need-based aid will come out in mid-Feb.

Does anyone know if we got accepted if we should expect a letter in snail mail? I know some colleges do both and sen fun goodies.

@HankCT…If your daughter’s midyear grades do not weaken her application, then you should definitely send them. At the very least, it will show her continued interest in the university. I also strongly agree with the previous recommendation to send an email indicating her continued interest. I think that applicants who take no further action after being deferred appear to have lost interest or given up on the school.

@pittsburghscribe

They will release the first round of Honors College invites on January 15th via the app portal page. The review is ongoing through the middle of March though so don’t get discouraged! It is also very, very competitive; students in the top 10% of their class with SATs over 1450 were typically invited last year. If no invite, student can always apply in their 2nd year.

@JBSeattle

Stats of EA admits- on average GPA was a 3.7 on 4.0 scale and SATs were in the 1300 range. The choice of program can also make a big difference in the decision process- things like the Nursing major or exercise science are extra competitive!

@iiMimic

Which program did you apply into? Some of the programs are extra competitive. It is worth reaching out to the admissions office to chat about it.

@ayecollegekid1

I agree with letting UVM know of your interest-if you haven’t already done so and you are deferred, reach out to your admissions rep. UVM also defers because they simply want to see a full semester of senior year grades and this is their way of giving the student more time to send in the new info.

I personally don’t think that having stats above UVMs averages results in a defer. I think that their holistic review process takes into account more than just numbers- it is my understanding that it is not enough to have a 3.9 on a 4.0 scale; students also have to have a competitive high school curriculum and maintain that competitive course load in their senior year. The choice of major also plays a significant role. I recommend reaching out to UVM Admissions directly to see what each deferred student can do to help improve their chances.

@ameliefrommont

I hope you are not discouraged. UVM deferring you is really not a bad thing- it is my understanding that this is UVMs way of giving you a second chance and re-reviewing your app with the regular decision pool. It is way better than a deny- phew! I talked to admissions and often times they defer to see a full semester of senior year grades- so make sure to send them that info. Also, call the office and speak to an admissions rep- see what you can do to improve your chances- that can never hurt. :slight_smile:

@Penned23 - anytime between January 15th and mid-March is what I was told.

@hankct I think they’re looking for full semester grades, so I would ask the high school to send them those rather than the Q1 grades. I advise contacting admissions directly to discuss with the rep though! I was also told that sending a letter of interest was helpful too! Wishing you well in the process!

@spacebunsweetie
Yes- if your GPA significant improves then contact admissions- they do reconsider for scholarships if new info is provided. Also be sure to contact the Financial Aid office to discuss income changes- they take that into consideration- 802-656-5700.

Good luck!

@Waynecollegedad- I recommend calling admissions and seeing if there is anything they can do. Also, the FAFSA can often help offset the cost. Wishing you well!

@spacebunsweetie Yes! Admitted students will be sent an official printed letter. Can’t wait!

@BreezeEaze Thanks for the comment. I’ve exchanged notes with Admissions, and they’ve been really helpful. They told me that we have to wait until mid-february to see what kind of aid and additional merit are available before our S is considered for merit. We have a high EFC number, and I don’t imagine that we’ll get aid. But we really cannot afford the full OOS tuition, even with what $ we’ve saved for college! We are asking for a just a little help…$15-$20 a year is all it would take. I hope they work with us; our S couldn’t be more enthusiastic about UVM however we will not allow him to go $80K into debt to make it happen. Not with other great offers from other great schools that he already has.
