No. UVM sent an email out to EA applicants letting them know to check their portal on 12/13 at 5 p.m. I received an acceptance, but did not get snail mail.
@Waynecollegedad
We are in a similar boat. We are not getting any financial aid. My D was deferred and we were thinking she would get in with scholarship $. She also has other options at this point. I think she is more enthusiastic then my Wife and I. It is a tough trip from Burlington to Seattle. Also I think my D is upset about the deferral as every other school has accepted her so far (given a few had low merit or no merit which made them unrealistic).
Anyways, good luck!!
Thanks! Good luck to you, too. @JBSeattle
Considering the fact that our S is not likely to get any financial aid, and he hasn’t qualified for scholarships in his initial acceptance, what can we expect in regards to scholarships come early next year? I guess my question is this: Are we dead in the water with respect to our financial picture with UVM? This is our first child we’re sending to college, so forgive me for being a novice. Do schools negotiate at all? He’s a good student, and accepted EA obviously, but just didn’t make the cut for merit. And financial aid is out of the question.
My son received his snail mail yesterday. We are in Massachusetts.
I’m a little late in posting, but my son was accepted into Environmental Engineering with a 3.75 gpa, 1430 SAT, Eagle Scout and other ECs. $17,000 per year Presidential Scholarship. He is very excited!
My son was in a similar situation 2 years ago. He got into most of his choices (late) but was deferred at Vermont. He ended up getting accepted with scholarship. Don’t get discouraged by deferral.
@wowed777
Did he do anything to show interest after the deferral or did he just wait?
He just waited, but we were told if there is additional information since the app he should send it. He did that with Maryland (sent first semester grades), but it didn’t help. He applied to a lot of schools because he had good grades, but poor sat results. We weren’t sure what he would get into. We were shocked after he got deferred at Vermont to get a letter that he was accepted and given a trustees scholarship.
@Waynecollegedad Sounds like our exact situation. Out of state, super enthusiastic about UVM, but would need the 15-20K merit to make it all work (especially if DD gets into Uconn).
@BreezeEaze Thanks for the suggestions. DD sent in a letter of intent (regarding the deferral). Really keeping the fingers crossed here. Her GPA is a tad lower (weighted 3.5), but that is partly because she has stacked up the rigorous classes (APs, honors, and ECE), and her SAT scores were solid (1300). She just got an acceptance from another school with a 21K per year merit award, but UVM would be an easy choice if they were to accept her and give her the 15-20K merit that their NPC estimates she would get.
As far as calling admissions, that is interesting. This is our first going to college and I would have thought that would have been a no no, since it seems like helicopter parenting. We’ve really tried to push her to do her own things and the required work. I presume it would make sense to wait and see the deferral final decision, and then if merit is an issue, call then?
@HankCT There is no right answer but my take is try now. Remember that these admissions officers also get ranked on yield…%of acceptances that enroll. You can always make a call without saying your child’s name…just whatever you are comfortable with. FWIW…my son just hung out last night with two UVM freshman from his HS…both of whom were deferred and ended up getting in with merit. This whole admissions thing is crazy…you never know. Trust your gut…
I’m a current first year student at UVM and was deferred last year but ended up getting accepted with a good scholarship/financial aid package. Don’t be discouraged, good luck to everyone!!
@gstudent13 Did they meet your full need? Did you get grants, or work study? Thanks!
@oscar63 I’m out of state but I got grants/loans and accepted the work study offer with my financial package. I strongly suggest looking/applying for scholarships now regardless of wherever your kid ends up! Good luck
@HankCT Admissions is pretty friendly and informative. I have never had any issues calling and asking questions. I do agree that perhaps, as a parent, rather than calling yourself, you could encourage your student to contact their rep directly to chat with them. It would be good practice for self-advocacy.
I was admitted ea to the animal science major, 20k presidential scholarship, and so basically in the portal I clicked on “register for Admitted students day” on the right-hand side of the page, and it took me to a place where I can choose what day, and it also says this about an honors college reception
“The Honors College invites prospective students and their families to attend an afternoon reception for all students invited to join the Honors College. At the reception in University Heights, you will have a chance to chat with and hear from current Honors College students, faculty members, and administrators. You will also meet other students who have been invited to join the Honors College Class of 2023.”
Does everyone else have this message? Or am I in the honors program even though I haven’t received any mail or anything about it?
@teddy10143 I do not see that in my daughter’s portal. She received an 18K scholarship, but wasn’t particularly expecting to get into the honors collage.
DD got the same message in her portal but no letter of acceptance into Honor’s Program yet. Maybe it will come soon?
My daughter also had the honors college reception listed on her admitted students portal - she received a $20K presidential scholarship - but no separate email or letter about honors yet.
