UVM for Environmental Science

Since Environmental Science is so popular at UVM, I thought I might start a thread just for that study. S is considering UVM and I think will likely end up there. He is still making his final decisions as more notifications are yet to come in, but he loved UVM when we visited so this is school is a likely one. Anyone else considering Environmental Science at UVM. Rubenstein school is where my S applied, but I know one can do environmental work at the agriculture school or even at College of Arts and Sciences. Who is considering UVM for Environmental Science? What did you like/not like about this major at this school?

My S is looking at environmental science as well, also accepted to Rubenstien. We’ve not yet visited but the strength of the program was a large factor in his deciding to apply.

I LOVED the Rubenstein School when I visited. It was honestly the thing that made me apply. I loved the location of that specific school (walk out the door, turn your head left and see a perfect view of the mountains). The program was highly regarded, something that you don’t get a lot of at the higher caliber instate schools (I’m from MA and Umass Amherst talks the business program up so much everything else is overshadowed even if other programs are just as good) and the professors seem to make a point to do research with students.
I’m getting nervous because Enviro Sci is a much more popular major at UVM than I realized and I applied RD. Fingers crossed!

@eandesmom, is your S still considering Rubenstein? @ciara2012, I do hope you are accepted. My S is still considering Rubenstein and actually it is his first choice. We are still trying to deal with the money aspect of things though. Any current Rubenstein students on here?

@elise303 he definitely is. We are visiting at the end of next month. I hear you on the money aspect though.

It will be a very interesting comparison of all his schools after we finish our visits but it is a strong contender. He’s trying hard not to have a to choice at the moment and then after our visits we will compare all programs and schools and the money factor.

We will have multiple kids in college next year, which makes the financial aspect harder. Still he and I far and away likes the environmental science program best at UVM. The Rubenstein building is beautiful and so is where is it located on campus, but what attracted my S to the program was the students and faculty we spoke to (committed and passionate) and the curriculum. Seems like the courses are laid out with lots of thought. He particularly liked that there was a course that was offered in Sophomore year that helped students determine within the big world of environmental science, what they wanted to study in depth. The more we talked and read about the program the more we were convinced that this would be an excellent program.

I agree about the curriculum. Very core based and not a ton of gen ed required. Really well laid out with lots of options. Which is good and bad, if a student changed majors to something outside of Rubenstein, it could be very difficult to graduate in 4 years I would think. Within the college relatively flexible I think though.

We will be looking closely at all of the curriculums as well as the financial aspect. We too will have multiples in college next year and one still to go.
