I'm torn between University of Vermont and Ithaca College. They seem like very similar institutions. I need advice and I'm sure other people know some things I don't about these schools or maybe just have a different point of view than I do. Which do you think I should go to and why?

Personally I would definitely go with UVM...

I hated the Ithaca campus, but loved the UVM campus.

Burlington is more accessible and a cooler town than Ithaca.

If you go to IC you might feel alienated/shunned by Cornell students. UVM basically runs to social scene in the Burlington area.

We have experienced both schools. Our daughter graduated from UVM in 2010 and our son will graduate from Ithaca in 2013. Our third child is debating between the two. It’s a difficult decision. Burlington is a magnificent setting, but Ithaca is beautiful as well. The UVM campus is slightly closer to downtown than is the Ithaca Campus. I feel that Ithaca, being slightly smaller and a private institution, offers more individual attention and generally smaller classes. The quality of education has been excellent. UVM is larger, with more majors. It may be better for the more self-sufficient type. Also, an excellent education for the motivated student.
I believe that the supposed “shunning” of Ithaca students by “superior” Cornell students is wildly exaggerated and largely mythical. It is mostly imagined and then propelled by silliness. My son has many friends from Cornell and students from both universities can and do take classes at both.
If it’s about skiing, I have to admit. UVM has the strong upper hand…Stowe, Bolton, Jay Peak to name a few within an hour. Ithaca has Greek Peak very near by which offers plenty of fun, but little variety.
