UW appeal responses - 2022

I came across this insightful and a candid post by UW Informatics Prof Amy J. Ko talking about her side of the admissions story. Factors mentioned are probably true for Freshman admissions too. Please advocate your local WA politicians to increase funding for various departments at UW and other state colleges.

The email from UW says ā€œyour appeal is approved and you have not yet confirmed your enrollment at the UW, you will be given an opportunity to do so.ā€.

It appears that we can take no action on current admission for now. And if the appeal is successful, they will give you a chance to accept after the May 1st deadline

You should be responding to @Prabs instead of me. Thank you.

Yes ,I called up UW admission office yesterday and they confirmed the same.If you aim for CS only at UW,we can wait for appeal decision results and if positive then they give us a week time to commit after the appeal decision results. So I am not committing to UW until I hear the decision back

As per UW Admissions Office, Appeal decisions will come in May, most like in 2-3 weeks. If you accept at some other college in next few days that will not be considered a negative, and will not hinder your appeal. The person did mention that they have received a record number of appeals and seats are very limited.

We will be accepting at other college to reduce risk and if offered an admission then evaluate if we want to accept. The hesitation stems after reading the 2yr old blogpost by Amy Ko and considering that undergrads are functioning as TAs (CSE142 in spring is led by a TA), it seems that UW is continuing to face severe shortage of staff/resources. That also means there could be not enough classes offered leading to additional stress even after accepting admission. :flushed:

Correction: Summer CSE142 is being led by a TA.

I say that with utmost respect for the TA. In normal case, I would expect university to hire for courses.

My appeal came back on the 28th, I appealed specifically for DAS and was admitted. Whoever mentioned that most of the appeal acceptances had already been given out either on here or on the Reddit forum was likely unfounded. I wish everyone the best of luck with the CS appeals as Iā€™m sure they are much more competitive.

Thatā€™s good to know - congratulations and thanks for sharing!

Not sure what UW is doing. Either too many people appealed and they need more time to process thus deferring beyond may 1st. In this case acceptance should come in gradually; or they cannot make a decision because they need to wait and look for specific profile of students based on who accepts and who doesnā€™t.

Suspense continues.Hope they either reject or accept appeal decision early of may 2022.Its time to move on.

Admissions told me that they have read all of the appeals. There are just files that they are calling a ā€œhold decisionā€. I asked if it was the ā€œmaybeā€ pile and they said basically. They said that will look at the appeal documentation and file holistically as a group after May 1.

I was told by admissions that thereā€™s no guarantee weā€™ll receive appeal decisions by the priority housing deadlineā€¦ anyone else commit to a different school, yet still holding on to hope for UW CS? Iā€™m stressed out by the looming deadlines and wondering how everyone else is dealing with it. Thought I would know the decision by the end of April so now I donā€™t know what to tell the potential roommates I found at either school :frowning:

Itā€™s past the decision day so I hope you have accepted at some college. Appeal decision is not guaranteed in your favor so I wonā€™t put much hope in it. Plan B should become Plan A now. It may not seem like that right now. No matter which college/major you pick, things have a way to work out.

To borrow from Prof Amy Ko -

Some of those paths will take you to where you want to go, other paths will take you to places you havenā€™t imagined. Life is a full of closed doors, but itā€™s more full of open ways. Keep searching for those open doors, and keep searching for people who will help you find them.

Any update anyone received?

Nothing yet.

Nothing yet. Do we know how many people have the email that says ā€œDecision will be made after May 1 confirmation dateā€?

Does anyone know about the number of CS freshmen open spots UW has for appeal candidates?
