Hi, I am considering applying to the University of Washington as a transfer student from a community college in Arizona.
I think the UW is a much better fit for me than my state school (University of Arizona). My only concern is that the grading scale is a bit harsh at the UW. My state university uses a simple ABCDE grading system (A = 4, B = 3 and so on).
Would going to the UW negatively impact my chances to be admitted into a top graduate school?
How is that harsh? I always thought it allows to assess one’s knowledge’s and relative position better. Getting a 4.0 for 92% of the work or 100% of the work sounds unfair. As always, just do your best and you should be fine.
I’ve gone through a CC, UW undergrad, and UW grad (almost) and while my grades changed, I never was below what I expected.
The grading system at UW could seem harsh, but it could also benefit you.
The percentage to 4.0 scale conversion varies by department and professor, but almost every course will grade you in 0.1 increments. This means you could receive a 3.3 for a B at UW, when you would only get a 3.0 at ASU.
I feel that this is just more accurate and since everyone here is graded that way, you should not be put at disadvantage. I wouldn’t consider this as a reason not to apply (:
yea i think this is actually a good thing hahaha, here is an example for you: i got mostly B’s last quarter, on your scale it wouldve been like a solid 3.0 but i ended up in the 3.3-3.4 range thanks to the UW grading scale
