Hi all. Just wanted to get some opinions on what school I should go to for computer science or engineering. My choices are Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, and University of Washington.

Normally U of W would be my top choice but out of state tuition is way to expensive. Should I take out loans and go to Washington despite the high cost? Then it is between Cal Poly and Davis. Which is better for comp sci major?

I would as well since I love Seattle. However out of state tuition is rarely worth it. Davis and Poly are both solid schools. I would go to Poly if you wanted to get a job after college and save some money. I would go to Davis if you want to go to graduate school.

My son graduated from Davis last June with a degree in computer science. He had a great time there, had good support from the career center and lots of interviews for jobs. He is now working in the defense industry as a programmer. The city of Davis is very much a college town and easy to love. Cal Poly is awesome-I’m an alum-but I can’t tell you much about CS degree. You need to go to the admitted student day at Poly and Picnic Days at Davis the next week!

Well, as of today I have visited all three schools and I am still stuck. Washington is beautiful and great for comp sci but far away and very expensive. Davis seems very active and has good food and IM sports and a good cs research school. Cal Poly has a really nice campus, great weather, and a solid cs program.

sigh I still can’t decide at all. If anyone else could help me out that would be great!

Well I’m in the UW CS program right now, so I might be a little biased. Though this is my 1st quarter there…

Few things to note

-It was ranked #6 for undergrad CS programs last year I think
-So it’s pretty competitive. They have an intense weed out process, and normally the avg. GPA in the program is like 3.7. So bottomline, it’s pretty competitive. Which can be a good or a bad thing depending on you.
-Overall, yeah it’s a nice area, nice campus, big school, etc.

At the end of the day you have to decide. Will joining a more competitive program in a new area be worth it? How much do you value a little better CS program? That you have to decide. If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask.

I was talking about the weed-out process being intense, and the GPA competitive. Would you at least consider 3.7 a competitive GPA in math/science classes?

GPA has nothing to do with level of competitiveness, especially with gpa creep

UC Davis is a great school with a great campus and community life to boot, dismissing it for UW is silly IMO

I could be wrong, but I believe UW has some weird admissions program where you don’t qualify for the engineering program until 2 years into your studies. Thus, you aren’t guarenteed you’ll be accepted as a CS major

Cal Poly SLO is awesome

UW is a CS powerhouse, but I’m not sure it’s worth it if you have to pay OOS tuition (this is coming from a prospective CS student at UW). As much as I want to recommend UW, it’s hard for me to justify the steep difference in price.

It doesn’t matter where you go. However, if you have to get a loan, it can be a problem to your financial situation. If you work hard, you can always be sucessful in a field you choose.

personally, i would rather stay instate and go to Cal Poly or Davis. Im also stuck between both, but im leaning towards Davis , personally, because it is a better location (closer to SF, Berkeley, and the Bay Area in general).

Im still confused about their academics, some people say Slo is better, some say Davis, and some say both are equal.

Deadline for Davis is also May 1st. Im not sure about Cal Poly Slo, though. Does anybody know the acceptance deadline for SLo?
